In 1942, the U.S. government invoked the Alien Enemies Act to justify the forced removal and incarceration of more than 125,000 people of Japanese descent — most of whom were American citizens. The act uprooted and split families, causing them to abandon their homes, businesses, and communities.

Before over 125,000 Japanese Americans were forced into incarceration camps following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor during WWII, they were sent to one of 15 temporary detention centers. These centers processed the arrival and transport of citizens, only bringing from home what they could carry.
