If you restate the question as “why are we hearing the worst stories of federal workers harmed by vindictive authoritarians with a penchant for punishing dissent with harassment and violence via anonymous Reddit posts, press reports, and lawsuit filings” I think the answer gets a bit easier to see
I've noted some of the procedural things Democrats could be doing in Congress, but this point from @edgeofsports.bsky.social's great piece in the Nation deserves emphasis.

This is basic politics, and it's baffling that every Democrat isn't doing it every day.

I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

Presidency-ending scandals that make Watergate look like a middle school prank, happening now hourly. Total failure of Article I. Maybe someone, anyone, in the DC press corps wants to ask Speaker Johnson or SML Thune about this? 🤷‍♂️
This database would give Musk detailed technical specifications of every system, detailed pricing and delivery schedules, and information on any confidential government investigations into every other U.S. defense firms. Conflict of interest does not get bigger than this.

"Project 2025 approved SSA administrator steps down just 3 weeks into the administration, giving up a GS-15 career in the process, because she knew even one more week on the job would risk putting her in prison for decades" is a very good and comforting sign

(Musk's touching the stove)
Just to be clear, because I don’t think the Post story highlights it enough: This was Trump’s day-one pick to lead the Social Security Admin until his nominee got confirmed who RESIGNED a career job rather than do what Musk’s DOGE team wants.

This is Treasury (DOGE) and DOJ (Adams) all over again.

It’s pretty wild that this is doing the exact same thing the Twitter files did where the set up is “we are finding all these crimes! All this depravity!” and then when you actually look at it you’re kind of shocked that there wasn’t more crime or depravity and that 99.999% of it was just office shit
When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted.
Yet somehow Musk isn't.

Gonna be reductive and rephrase: Vance moved by Auschwitz to advocate for present day German Nazis
After spending yesterday visiting Dachau and saying he was "really moved" by his time there, today JD Vance went to Munich to say that German political parties need to break the firewall against the far-right, Holocaust-minimizing AfD and start working with it: www.zeit.de/politik/ausl...

1. I have said it before and I will say it again that the last election was decided not on policy, but on information, and given the result of that election, it’s safe to say that we have entered a new era, a kind of American Dark Ages, in which superstition, fear and ignorance reign supreme.

Yes. Important for all NIH people and scientists:

The executive orders are not law. The President *cannot* make laws.

And in fact, executive orders may violate the law. As a federal employee, you are obligated not to follow illegal orders. That includes illegal EOs.
i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.
i mean, the president's executive order isn't a goddamn law! as far as this doctor is concerned, who cares what the president says!
