Reads: The mountains would be migrating soon. It was clear by the way the snow and boulders rolled off their peaks and the birds flew from their stony backs. If Talisa squinted, she could see them shift in place, teetering as though they were about to topple over. In truth, their countless root-like legs were wrestling themselves from the soft soil. Before long, they would begin their long march to find new stretches of earth to plant themselves. Talisa wished she could have stayed to watch them leave. Mountains only migrated once every hundred or so years. The last time she saw one move, she was a child, and too young to appreciate their majesty. Not that her parents let her get close enough to do so. From the safety of their colony, they watched the mountain by their colony shuffle mindlessly eastward, knocking over trees and ambling through Liberation Lake, while Talisa and her parents were safe behind blast-proof windows at least ten feet thick. Other moments from that day did not come to her as clearly. Her father insisted she cried and waved goodbye to the giant living rock. Why she didn’t remember that, who could say? She rested by her speeder as its hydrobattery finished charging in the river. The trees swayed in a calm breeze. Puffy seeds rode by on a gust of air, rooting themselves on a mossy outcrop in the distance. A mothbat settled on the long stem of a flower with prismatic petals, colours shifting as the light danced along its sharpened petals. Birdsongs and the babbling of the creek behind her tickled her ears. It was soon interrupted by the chime of her battery, and an electronic voice calling out “Fully Charged.” Kicking herself off the speeder, she trudged over. The top half of the battery, a brass ring angled upward for her to grasp, breached the surface of the water. From beneath the stream came a radiant cyan light, and a low hum. [editor's note: the rest of the description will continue on Page 3!] [editor's note: due to character limits, I moved some of the alt text from Page 2 to Page 3.] Without hesitating, she stepped one foot into the waters and reached over to collect the bulky, lantern-shaped fuel cell. After a thorough towelling to ensure it didn’t short out the vehicle’s insides, she loaded it in. Please, not like last time, she said to herself. Internal processors revved up and her ride was alive again. The speeder evoked the image of a wingless, legless bird, and when its headlamps and side-lights flashed on, the steel body appeared as though it was decorated with feathers. Fishing her gloves from her pockets and the flight jacket off of the duskox-leather seat, Officer Cadet Talisa Severn put herself behind the handlebars and switched the machine on. Her speeder huffed and lifted itself off the ground. As she slid goggles over her head, in the corner of her eye, she noticed the smallest mountain in the range was moving forward. Some amazing gay history. Listen up kids.
I'm watching that documentary "Before Stonewall" about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting. The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one "known homosexual". The "known homosexual" is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson. So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there's nothing wrong with him mentally and he's never been arrested. When asked whether he'd take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he's gay, he says that they didn't up until tonight, but he guesses they're going to find out, and he'll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like ... why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says "I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself." 1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium. Despite the pseudonym, Dale's boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary. Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson's disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.

Most of the issues with the tech industry right now stem from the fact that these people were raised on a steady diet of tech exceptionalism and were trained to believe that art doesn't matter because it's not fundamentally about driving capitalism a little further.
