Joe Rogan and Theo Von slam DHS for using Von's image in a video promoting deportation:

"I was like, oh my God, what the fuck are they doing? That's not how you envision the government."

"They were making, like, deportation hype videos with trap beats and shit. What are we doing? It's idiocracy."

I sold 7 while-u-wait poems at a garage sale on Saturday (wrote them on my typewriter) for $5 each which is actually more money than I make from selling a copy of my novel so idk who said there's no money in poetry but I'm thinking of changing careers

It's actually not swindling to tell people what they want to hear if you actually intend on doing those things. Swindling would be something like, just for example, announcing a fake Hyperloop system solely to kill California's high speed rail initiative.

Tomorrow is the Fifth of November – but let’s forget Guy Fawkes and his actions against an arrogant Protestant king and instead look to our own history: the unlawful attack on Parihaka and, by extension, Māori sovereignty.

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Leave a message!
my most unpopular opinion is that it's a sign of defective moral character if you point blank refuse to answer phone calls from unknown numbers. it's not that hard to hang up on spam/scammers, and you are probably missing important calls!

Meanjin’s performance and sustainability were the focus of a review commissioned by MUP in February. The final recommendations of the report, which was never released publicly, did not include closing Meanjin.
Who killed Meanjin?

still can't get over the stupidness of the jokes in the new Naked Gun movie. 100 dumb jokes per minute, I haven't laughed like that in a cinema in such a long time

I am old enough to have lived through so many iterations of this exact thing on the internet. They will make it impossible to leave or exist outside their platform, and when they inevitably implode, leave writers, creatives and communities in the dust with nothing and no alternative.
i guess in short, something that seems like a good thing ("yay, it's easier to subscribe!") ends up also being a way that substack writers will find it less and less "practical" to leave. i talked a lot about lock-in my leaving note, and this is just a thing to be added to that list. an FYI.
i am really glad i migrated webworm (www.webworm.co) off of substack last week. just now, substack has decided to make it impossible to take certain subscribers with you if you change platforms. remember how i talked about lock-in? it's just going to get worse.
