Always wanted to write (if I’m not using the talent God gave me, I feel it’s a waste), but also wanted to cherrypick what I write about, so I got the only day job that would enable me to pay my bills and also be enjoyable (hanging around in the country’s best live music venue).

A product of working-class Manchester and its second-generation Irish culture, Stone Roses bassist Mani — who has died aged 63 — was the ultimate team player, and an embodiment of socialist values in his life and art.

TRUMP [after spending 5 minutes with Zohran]: surplus value, it’s a very wonderful thing, very wonderful, and they’re stealing it. Can you believe that?

Years ago on a political show, I forget which, they visited party leaders' homes and during the Nathan Gill bit he stood creepily and too close to the reporter, speaking in an odd whispery voice. Anyway I'm not surprised he's facing jail time, I'm just surprised it's not for being a serial killer.

Mani is dead and we’re all getting old. My dad made me my first mixtape in 1989: it had Sugar Spun Sister and Made in Stone on it. We listened that album to death (those first and last songs, man), saw them in Heaton Park as a family in 2012. What a band. And, by every account, what a lovely bloke.
