Why do video games cost so much to make these days? A recent NYT article pinned bloated budgets on the graphical arms race, but that's only a small part of the equation. The real problem? Rampant mismanagement.

This week's column is a spicy one: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
Why So Many Video Games Cost So Much to Make
Graphical fidelity is only part of the reason that game budgets have swelled to hundreds of millions of dollars

So I started a new playthrough of Dust: An Elysian Tail last night, since I'm only missing a couple of its Steam achievements that I wanna get.

And yep, the game's still a masterpiece. ^^

A genealogical mystery straight out of 1998. Scour the early Internet for clues, uncover hidden connections, and piece together the family tree behind the secretive Roottree Corporation.

im an indie dev. i am not specifically out to get you. if anything being an indie dev as a fulltime career means im out to get myself
its ok to say you don't like a game, you don't have to make up a story about how the devs are actually awful people looking for a quick cash grab (development took 4 years lmao) and who made a game you don't like in a genre you do like specifically to spite you

Now, time to make parametric L-Systems. I'll make two versions : GDScript and C++ modules (as it can be heavily parallelized) for #godot . #gamedev

Great post on the morality of Arcane.
"why does arcane have so many visual parallels comparing mel to viktor?" theyre the only 2 mages we see in the show themed around the arcane and perfectly exemplify how in one end people Born Into Power barely use it for good vs others will kill themselves over and over to attain that kind of change

Silicon Valley loves H-1B visas because they let them hire highly qualified foreign engineers for peanuts.

American engineers can quit and find a better job, but H-1B holders? The transfer process is so messy most companies won’t even consider them.

Here's the first release of godot-screenreader!

It's a script that imitates the behavior of a screenreader in godot games so you can load interfaces. It's early in development but it has enough functionality to work with the TTS.

Seeing a looooot of takes and:

- if you can move on from Unity you should. Just cus they've proven themselves iffy and closed source limits your options.

- Unreal is fine if you like it. It has source. Worst case you branch off.

- Don't bare metal your own tech. Start with Godot. Saves ya time.
One of the biggest questions in 2024 was if developers should move on from Unity and other proprietary engines, and if so, how?

At GDC 2024, developer Rez Graham made a case for building your own engine, outlining the available tools, as well as some pitfalls #GDBestof2024
Why (and how) you should leave Unity and Unreal to make your own engine
Longtime developer Rez Graham shares the advantages (and disadvantages) of building your own tech for indie game development.

One of the really common questions I get with #BadActorBingo is: why would anyone want to DO that? What's their MOTIVE? It's a hard question to answer sometimes, because there's a billion possible answers and some of them make you sound like the guy standing in front of the murder board ranting.

I'm starting to really really love isolated vocals of famous songs. Because yes, I know Stevie Wonder and Freddie Mercury can sing.

But man, when the mic is on and the instruments are gone, you can really experience how perfect and damn near spiritual their voices are.
