learned recently that the guy who wrote "The Night Before Christmas," clement clarke moore, also wrote a takedown of thomas jefferson's proto-scientific racism in "Notes on the State of Virginia," basically accusing him and others of making it up to justify slavery. which, that's right.

This may explain why there’s an aggressive response to people who merely post Kirk’s own words. It threatens the existence of the alternate Kirk - the motivational speaker that had been marketed to young kids and white Christian groups through selective quotation & clips.

Kind of weird how Roberts declared the VRA preclearance to rest on dated and unfair assumptions about the South and within 15 years the former Confederate states will have effectively eliminated almost every black district within those states.
Missouri Republicans today passed a new gerrymander that would break apart the Democratic district in Kansas City, which would flip a seat to the GOP. (The governor is expected to sign it.) www.kansascity.com/news/politic...

Charlie Kirk was an unrelenting and divisive racist, misogynist, and homophobe with a media platform. That wasn’t politics. That was monetizing hate.

NEW: No, Charlie Kirk was not practicing politics the right way. That's what Ezra Klein said. We can condemn this heinous assassination but also recognize that with his 2020 election denialism and extremist rhetoric, Kirk built his movement with falsehoods and in a wrong and divisive manner.

I don't feel any particular joy in Charlie Kirk getting shot. It's not the sort of thing I celebrate.

But I also struggle to care when someone gets the very thing they've wished for openly, on multiple occasions, in multiple iterations, for literal years, b/c they thought it would be someone else.

The route from DC to Boston is 475 miles.

This would be an hour and a half without stops. Probably 2 hours tops with them.

It could go from DC to New York in 45 minutes.

We could have this if we didn't suck.
I enjoyed this. And what an infectious laugh. ❤️

Fascinating interview comparing today's media with media in the Jim Crow era, and how the newspapers helped entrench Jim Crow.

Transcript: The Media Should Be Biased—Against Authoritarianism
Kathy Roberts Forde, a journalism historian at UMass Amherst, argues much of the media was pro-authoritarian in the Jim Crow era today and should not repeat that history.

Over the weekend, the “sandwich thrower” posters went up all over DC. Instant icon of resistance.

I’ve seen more than one post now of people saying the Republicans will pay a political price for this vote in 2026 and I gotta say folks… you’re all way more optimistic than I am. Americans aren’t great with cause and effect. They’ll assume their Medicaid got cut because of Dems somehow
