Newsletter: I want my damn tech industry back. I'm sick of these sociopathic and directionless freaks wasting hundreds of billions of dollars on AI and ruining products in search of perpetual growth.

It has never been more urgent to hold them accountable.

Yes every conservative social media site becomes a tropical rainforest of school shooters and Ponzi schemes but did you know that there is a left-wing social media site where people are rude to the nation’s center-right political pundits

A big part of the problem is stupid people have been convinced by rich people that AI is God, when AI is closer to an automatic dog food dispenser.

Democrats stop being terrified of being called a socialist challenge.

They’re going to call you one regardless. When they do say “Yes, that’s right, unlike Republicans I think American society should be defended and nurtured, not demolished by bigots and sold by billionaires and bosses.”
Every elected Democrat will acknowledge that the GOP has held an overwhelming media advantage since at least Obama. Somehow they fail to make the connection that everyone who's weathered a competitive election was *successfully* painted as trans Stalin gay married to Pelosi, and they won anyway

"Rolling Stone, WIRED, Teen Vogue, and your favorite tech blog leading the charge against fascism while your parents' Very Serious Papers of Record dig their own graves" sounds like cringe Millennial fan fiction from the Livejournal of someone whose parents banned them from using Limewire, and yet,
I've been a fan of Mike/Techdirt for years - he championed a lot of the adaptive stuff we were doing with NIN in the 2000s against the grain of the industry (embracing torrents, Creative Commons, pay-what-you-want albums, etc).

Great to see Techdirt firmly meeting the moment. Hopefully more follow.
Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog).

This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else.

The administration got rid of 18F under the cover of night. People who own skyscrapers are afraid of 100 people who make websites.

Not because of the latest tech fad, but because we proved the government can be fixed, the government can be made better and the government can work for the people.

Rahm Emanuel saying he’s a predator so trans people shouldn’t have rights is a pretty clear distillation of the issue. Cishet men are sexual predators but they have all the power, while trans people have the least power, so trans people must be blamed for and punished for the crimes of cishet men

I owe an apology to all James Bond movies. I mocked them for having completely unrealistic, cartoonish villains that simply weren't believable.

2025 has made it impossible to levy that criticism anymore.

You should know that a big part of 18F's work was to make sure multi-million to multi-*hundreds*-of-millions dollar contracts at fed *and* state level didn't go to shitty enterprise IT consultancies that *repeatedly* delivered tech that didn't work, was late, or didn't even do what it needed to

*raises hand

Because we've let the press consolidate in the hands of right wing billionaires with a vested interest in the hollowing out of informed consensus and real journalism, replaced by shallow ad-based controversy infotainment designed largely to disorient, distract, and coddle power?
How come we've left it to Teen Vogue and Rolling Stone to bring all the real heat lately, while the OpEd pages of the NYT and WaPo and half the regulars in pubs like The Atlantic have gone so far as to practically join the bad guys?
When a single billionaire can accumulate more money in 10 seconds than their employees make in one year, while workers struggle to meet the basic cost of rent and medicine, then yes, every billionaire really is a policy failure.

Imagine if we still had a robust, efficient passenger rail network instead of dismantling it. Then maybe we wouldn’t be stuck choosing between soul-crushing traffic and TSA lines, both miserable, one deadly. We had it, we tore it down, and now we’re paying the price.

so they removed the barriers because the barriers were working
I’ve never forgotten that Mass Ave had good bike infrastructure that got removed because drivers were slamming into barriers (instead of striking bicycles) at such speeds that people kept rolling their cars: www.bostonglobe.com/2020/12/19/m...
