I suspect this is true - the humanities will go back to being a status marker. Rich kids and the elect get to study Homer, but the middle class must settle for adjunct-taught mega-lectures before STEM classes.

A grim destination, but right now that is the road the voters keep choosing.
My hot take is that over the next 10 years, we're going to see more emphasis on and investment in the humanities at Ivy League and other fancy schools just as state schools and small privates continue to decimate and even eliminate the humanities.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

I was raised by my grandparents. My grandfather grew up Dickensian- street- urchin- poor on the streets in Manhattan; fought in WWII; and then got a good union civil service job that allowed him to retire after 30 years with a pension at age 61. The loss of that historic connection is a problem now.
I feel like a lot of us were privileged to be among the last generation to be able to learn under the 60's civil rights generation. What im seeing today from this newer generation of children is a serious lack of grounding, which i think is due to them not having direct access to the type of

DOGE was created for data theft and infrastructure dismantling and it wildly succeeded on both counts within the first few weeks of its existence. It will take a generation to rebuild what it destroyed and the breach of data is unprecedented.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

2) always very funny when these people realize the extent to which their billionaire patrons could not possibly give less of a shit about them

Late, but I wanted to jump in on this trend. While I love Fieren, I am deeply inspired by how brave this person was! They went for the hard thing, were curious, made us all rejoice and draw together!

It makes me so happy to see folks gain that artistic curiosity!

So go forth! Rooting for you! 💖

I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.

I hate this sort of meme.

Probably just a coincidence, but it's kinda...odd?...that this WSJ column about resisting the plagiarism machine repeats some of the points and flirts with some of the language I used in my column about the exact same subject three months ago?

Remember according to Republicans, 15 year old girls are actually adult women while 30-something year old men with government jobs are just wee little lads who aren't responsible for their racist and Nazi memes because boys will be boys.
Fox News displaying a poll with the first age bracket for women and men being 15-44.

Once again, 15 year olds are children.

They are kids.

They are not adults, they can’t consent to sex, and pedophilia must not be normalized.

It is EXTREMELY way past time for people to stop saying "the economy" when they mean "the stock market."

The stock market is fully divorced from reality. It does not represent anything meaningful about the actual standards of living.
one factor in the Harris loss was the Democratic party bragging about the great economy when it was actually complete garbage outside the artificially juiced stock market, and I don't expect that tactic to work any better for Trump esp with a much worse economy

A guy asking Epstein for advice on how to sexually harass a junior colleague knows exactly what Epstein was and was clearly OK with it. I am frankly OK with someone ruining his life.

Evidently it ought to have happened decades ago.
Larry Summers is 70. Firing him is not ruining his life.
