Yup. This realization completely changed the way I use social media. I was being manipulated into engaging with and propagating bad takes. It hijacks human tendency to believe something that is repeated often enough en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusor...

notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?

anyway that’s why these events are important

When I worked on social features for online games, my favorite test for whether we were taking player safety into account was the "Ex-boyfriend Test", as in:

If I was your ex-boyfriend, how would I use this feature to make your life miserable?
Bad actors will SQL inject you, but they will also find ways to take your “good faith” features and abuse them: location services, community tagging, voting, auto-moderating with mass reporting.

A better world is possible
According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150K trees have been planted & 45ha of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to & manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) by 2050.

Just the start.

Common sense.

here's my take: I think humans are really fucking good. inherently. I think we are amazingly kind and giving. and everything about the world we live in is an attempt to stop us from being that. I think our societies step in to stop us from being good. I think our culture punishes us. but we ARE good

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

This and the removal of lead from fuel are probably two of the greatest achievements of the last few decades.
I honestly don't think everyone talks enough about how amazing it was when the world came together to fix the hole in the ozone layer, so I wrote this:

It's a good reminder of what we're capable of.
Let's All Remember When We Saved The World

this. if this wasn't true, they wouldn't be spinning info so visibly desperately at every opportunity
Do not assume that everything they set out to do is inevitable. They have been successfully fought on multiple fronts, from courtroom wins that have actually stuck to city and state governments that haven't backed down, to activists in the streets organizing against their violence.

Did you know you don't have to write every thought you have on the computer?

That's right - believe it or not there are many cases where the thrill of likes and reposts do not outweigh the potential real world consequences, regardless of how unlikely they are!

Yeah, I worked in customer support and, if it's a 'peak' of one day, they will not care. They'll wipe their hands and say "ok, volumes are back to normal, it's fixed"
If after a week they are still receiving pressure... Then they'll begin to get nervous
we are going to need to keep up this 'yelling at payment processors' energy for more than just today

Ideally, we will need to keep up this pressure over a span of a few weeks

As many people as possible, each making 2-4 calls a day, for a few weeks, is going to make the biggest impact
