Social worker, trauma therapist, mom, musician, nerdy Jew. Consummate pinko cuz I’m too commie for the libs and too lib for the commies. Married to @joelhs.bsky.social. Gotta remember to post about medieval food history and fun stuff to preserve sanity.
I feel like there’s been a trend in recent period pieces that’s like “This is not your MOM’s period piece, there’s modern slang and modern swearing and people drink and a fuck a lot and it’s all very Manly and Raw and Relatable!” But like, I literally want my mom’s period pieces?

right, and people just absolutely refuse to parse out the difference between "it's reasonable to feel resentful and uncomfortable with people who vote for really bad stuff" and "everyone is actually politically literate enough to know what they're voting for", only one of which is true

It would be a lot better for my mental health if Bluesky were nothing but this. (And no. Do you really think the romance novels Quark found were the only smut he consumed? He definitely had some hard enough stuff to come up with a more realistically detailed dick.)
Late night thought: we know that Odo struggles with the details of humans in Deep Space Nine, it’s why his hair and face are like that, but he also canonically fucks. This raises a question, when he fucked did his boner look like an uncooked hot dog?

Thing is, a lot of communities do have systems to address these things and what that looks like is “The pastor or the church elders tell the wife she needs to be more obedient and pray harder.” I have yet to see a hardcore abolitionist contend with the fact that some communities are pro-abuse.
Look, if your community justice and reconciliation system doesn't have a way to address someone like Ted Bundy and domestic abuse, I'm sorry, but it's not a serious system.
I‘m tired of being nice about this; “abolitionism” has had years to develop a non-idiot policy program and the best they’ve come up with is ”murder without even the pretense of juridical process.” And I am not nut-picking; this is all over abolitionist writing.

Yeah, but then that’s not abolition anymore, it’s reform which is very, very uncool on the internet.
I think “abolish prisons” should be focused on the current form where they are slave labor camps. Life imprisonment is meant to be the safer option to capital punishment, and that needs to stay. Lesser offenses should be focused on fixing underlying issues - ie preventing addiction or basic housing.

I did the shallowest of dives into his background and came away thinking that there are even more things about him that we should be talking about that we aren’t. Like…before he served in the Marines in the Iraq War he was…protesting that war in high school? The fuck?
Fake bluecollar Nazi failsons shouldn't get handed Senate seats. Hope that helps.
In order to move men, we have to welcome folks who have done things in the past we abhor. We have to allow folks to redeem themselves.

It’s sometimes uncomfortable, but it’s the only way we can win moving forward.

The math doesn’t math without more men.

Like you guys really think that the left has lingering problems with racism and homophobia and transphobia and sexism and Islamophobia but is totally unproblematic when it comes to the Jews?

I really want to watch Frankenstein but then I remember that I actually find that book extremely upsetting and I don’t know if I can handle it being mostly-faithfully brought to screen by Guillermo del Toro, a guy who has made other (brilliant) movies that I find too upsetting to watch again.

The headlines that have pics of Spanberger and Mamdani like "Which Way Modern Dem Man??" Come on. The answer is OBVIOUSLY (and has been, and will be) "both," "all," "whichever". What part of "gigantic diverse coalition of half the electorate" is confusing to people?

Yeah, this may not be a popular opinion (or maybe it is?) but his response is way more damning to me than the tattoo itself. I can forgive a *lot* of dumb and offensive shit from people who demonstrate actual growth but this? This is…not that. In an extremely worrying way.
Platner taking his campaign in a “they’re trying to get me” direction after the tattoo is a flashing, Fetterman-shaped warning light for what he could be like if elected, and I think it’s enlightening to see who can see that and who can’t because he’s “upsetting the right people”.
"It's really interesting to have this whole power structure essentially turn on to try to drag my name through the mud." Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner describes the resistance he has experienced within the Democratic Party.

All of my female cousins are my daughter’s aunts. What, she’s gonna go around saying “Cousin So-and-so?” This isn’t Downton Abbey lol.
I like how Zohran Mamdani scandals are like "He called his old cousin his aunt one time" and Andrew Cuomo scandals are like "He sexually assaulted 13 women."

Just found out our soon-to-be-former pediatrician of the past year doesn’t believe in Covid shots for children so don’t be dumb like us and assume you’re safe from that nonsense because you’re in a major metro area in a blue state. 😬

notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?

anyway that’s why these events are important

I think the “women can always get a man” talk is another reason we don’t hear about female loneliness. It’s not just that women’s feelings aren’t valued, it’s that it’s shameful to even admit loneliness when it’s essentially an admission of profound undesirability to the point of social deviancy.
“But women can always get a man if they just lower their standards!”

Cool story bro. You lower yours first.

We really should talk about this more. Any discussion of the value (or lack thereof) of a supplement should always foreground the fact that, in the US, anything classified as a supplement (as in neither a food or a drug) is essentially unregulated. Not only is nobody checking on things like lead
i was surprised to learn that bc most protein powders are considered dietary supplements, they basically fall into a regulatory grey area

there's no federal limit on the amount of lead they can contain and neither manufacturers nor the FDA have to prove these products are safe before they're sold

Worth mentioning that he also name-searches himself constantly and attacks gentiles that stand up for Jews. He went after Lindsay Ellis over her video on Ms. Rachel, as well as Sarah Z for daring to have an intelligent conversation with her on Bluesky.

He's bad news.
Chaverim. Beloveds. Don't interact with Bad Empanada

He was banned from Twitter years ago after he called for the murder of Israeli children. He regularly denies that antisemitism exists.

This is not someone you debate, this is not someone you platform to your followers. This is someone you block.

Imagine trying to explain the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, the deadliest antisemitic violence in US history, but being prohibited from discussing anti-immigrant bigotry and xenophobia. “The shooter hated Jews because he thought we were importing… never mind.”

At my own college, we’ve been told we cannot do trainings for incoming students on other kinds of bigotries, but we can train students on antisemitism. But separating antisemitism from other forms of bigotry is ultimately an incoherent way of understanding antisemitism.
