Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)
Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults. Hey folks – I’ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so today’s announcement on our blog is something I’ve been pretty involved with. I’ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured I’d add some more context to today's news. I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults. And if you are one of the smaller subset of folks that we can't definitively pre-identify, then still, you only have to do it if you're accessing age-restricted servers or channels, or changing certain settings. That's really not most users. (Altho... might be more Redditors, tbh.) Last, I know that there is concern about privacy and data leaks. That's a real concern. The selfie system is built purely client-side, it never leaves your device, and we did that intentionally. That'll work for a bunch of users who aren't pre-identified as adults. But if you do end up in the ID bucket, then yeah, you're right that has some risk. We're doing what we can to minimize this by working with our range of partners (who are different partners than the data leak you read about), and if it's any help, we learned a lot internally from the last issue. But I get if that doesn't necessarily inspire more confidence. Anyway, we’ll be sharing more next month as we get closer to the global roll out about the system, including the technology behind it in March. I honestly wouldn't be happy if we didn't build something good and I am excited about what we’re launching, but please let us know what you think when we share more details. And I really appreciate everybody's feedback here today. We’re definitely reading it!

This copium of the masses, in which we all can't but indulge to varying degrees, offers a brief respite from facing the unbearable reality that resistance as we've been conducting it has not only failed to push ICE out, but even to keep them from killing our patrollers, while exposing many of us to the same risk. "All our efforts are failures until we win, as a deceased comrade once put it, and we haven't won until all ICE and CBP agents are out of Minnesota. Let us not be fooled by comforting but premature proclamations of victory. Concessions are never just concessions, but attempts at pacification and demobilization. The ouster of Gregory Bovino and replacement by Border Czar Tom Homan is just such an attempt. In truth, it is the practice of rapid response that harbors the most potent seeds of strategic escalation. It is not hotel noise demos, not one-day sick-outs heralded as a "general strike," not even autonomous direct action (all of which we support), and surely not LARPy, macho armed marches through the streets of South Minneapolis — but rather that most legally innocuous and inclusive mode of resistance which has so far exhibited the greatest potential in actually obstructing the deportation regime. (As an aside, it's worth noting that in the suburbs and rural areas, active patrollers and responders are disproportionately women, many of them mothers.) But the seeds gestating in the networks will only sprout when rapid response comes to recognize and realize itself as what it always has been, in all but its official codifications. The point doesn't escape our adversaries. In a viral tweet, former Green Beret Eric Schwalm plagiarizes ChatGPT to concoct a patently ridiculous but telling characterization of the "low-level insurgency infrastructure" of Minnesotans' rapid response networks.

In addition to their latent insurgent potential, the Twin Cities' rapid response networks signal the possible resurgence of a proletarian civic life independent of the mainstream two-party system and the institutions of a decrepit civil society and left-wing milieu. In the suburbs especially, thousands of working-class people have glimpsed the prospect of a more meaningful experience of community, following decades of atomization and a decaying social fabric. The formation of these networks, from Minneapolis and Saint Paul to the suburbs, and even into parts of the exurbs and rural hinterland, has provided a rich supply of oxygen and nutrients to the formerly comatose brain of working-class civic life, spurring the formation of new socio-neural connections. These proto-political networks harbor the potential to mature into class institutions tasked with coordinating sustained oppositional political and economic action, while restoring a social fabric promised, but never delivered, by so many astroturfed campaigns that too often accomplish little more than channeling our longing for collective agency into transferable email lists.

What exactly is so bad with age verification. I remember in my days…. So like 100 years ago, when I was a teen there was age verification everywhere. I had to „borrow“ my parents ID to access ….. „alternative art“ websites. I don’t really see such a big problem. But maybe I don’t see the big picture

As this user mentioned before, Discord had a breach that affected a shit tone of users. This facial scan & ID bullshit is just another breach in the making. Be it by performative individuals to make a point or hostile individuals to steal information, it doesn't mater. The risk is still there.

It could be really bad for Discord if Californians contact the office of the Attorney General to report the potential violations of CCPA and CALOPPA citing the recent breach from a few months back where 1.5tb of user data and millions of IDs were leaked, but who can say for sure?
