The Justice and Anti Corruption League

Jackal mascot ready to feed corrupt bussinessmen and politicicans to Amut

The jackal party using anubis imagery to show the threat of legal judgement and consequences on grifters would be really nice.

Honestly when you remember the Bene Gesserit and Mentats are literally superhero types before the messiahs come into play then a lot of the improbable stuff can basically be rolled with in the way that people living in major cities in a superhero world is. Genre convention, not realism.

Herbert, by complete accident, predicted that actual cyberpunk was far more likely to look like the House of Saud than neon-Zaibatsus.

One of the things that's deeply annoying with how people have taken inspiration from Dune is that everyone copy-pastes the space feudalism, but no one takes any inspiration from the fact that the noble houses are basically space-Hansa.

I suppose I'd say that 'stories need the things they think are important to make sense' but also that a really good shortcut to something that makes sense is to model a secondary, created world on the primary one. That can give systems the feeling of realness.

Economies don't need to make sense but logistics/physics ought to! @bretdevereaux.bsky.social makes this point repeatedly talking about both GoT and Rings of Power.

The extent to which you can trace long contiuous inheritances for most European thrones across the High Middle Ages and Early modern period (roughly 800 years, maybe?) is honestly an unusual feature of European history compared to everybody else except maybe Japan.

It's kind of the worst possible example because what killed GoT was finally firmly landing on the rails.

Who's gonna end up on the Iron Throne? Somebody we've heard of, because that's how stories work! The fact that it isn't how real history works gives the core conceit a half life.

I do also think GoT going off the rails with its own internal contradictions is what led to the You Must Build Economies That Make Sense conversations in 2010s SFF that… well, I haven’t really seen a lot of fruit from either

I'm skeptical that Trump's make Ukraine surrender plan wasn't real.

Trump envoy Witkoff negotiated it, details and threats to Ukraine were public for multiple days, and Rubio didn't dispute it then, only after the plan got a bad reception and rejected by Europe.

Look like attempting to save face.
Republican Senator Mike Rounds said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a call to senators, confirmed the so-called 28-point “peace plan” was actually a Russian wishlist and is “not the administration’s position”. Nor is there any threat to cut off weapons or intelligence to Ukraine.

Wicked just ended so if you need me, I’m the guy weeping a little at the drive in, preparing myself for what I assume will be more weeping at the drive in.
Heading to the drive in for a double feature of Wicked and Wicked: For Good. Hell yeah.

For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

The entire Republican power structure shits on the constitution every day. If we’re not ready to bury the GOP as a party forever, we won’t recover. They’re not a legitimate political party. They are a crime syndicate.

It’s crazy to think about the crimes we’re going to learn about after this regime ends.

We’re already hearing about Watergate level crimes every week. Imagine what will come out after it’s over.

We’re going to need a full accounting of all that’s been done in violation of the constitution.

This is objectively true. Unfortunately, roughly 30-40% of the country doesnt see it that way and never will. Real accountability will be all consuming and will require immense courage

Also, here's my other statement: Placebo doesn't mean ineffective. We call it the placebo effect because it's literally effective, and weirdly enough, some placebos have become more effective over time.

Anyway, I recognize that there is a lot of awful shit out there, but truly you have to understand that (a) Western medicine is not the be all and end all of the entire world and (b) we have some huge honking holes in our ability to treat people, and people are going to try everything they can.
