Time for a master thread on all the reasons we are headed for a (likely very bad and prolonged) recession. First, tariffs. So much stove-touching you can’t believe it. www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/lut...
Lutnick says Trump's policies are "worth it" even if they lead to recession
The president's tariff announcements have rocked the stock markets and fueled concerns of an economic downturn.

The charges against protestors announced today by Bondi were very clearly done with producing #content as the first priority and law enforcement a distant second. The decision to wave mugshots around is already harming DOJ's credibility in court www.nytimes.com/2026/01/28/u...

For as long as it wants, until Congress packs the court.
The Supreme Court stay is still operative, so there is no immediate material effect, but this is another lower court decision that further casts doubt on the legitimacy of the existing SCOTUS. How much longer can it overturn well-reasoned lower court decisions w/ out briefing or argument?

Under Biden, Merrick Garland spent time investigating Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, but NEVER prosecuted any Trump official.

You have him to thank for Trump's second administration.

More fundamentally: SCOTUS’ interpretation of bribery laws or its made-up immunity doctrines can all change on a dime, with a different SCOTUS.

Win Congress, nuke the filibuster, pack the Court, and prosecute Trump (and everyone else). Take emergency appeals to overrule shitty precedent.
Even under SCOTUS's dubious reasoning in Trump v. U.S., there is no scenario in which maneuvering billions of dollars to an offshore account to keep it out of reach from Congress and courts is an "official act." This is all criminal and impeachable.
Marco Rubio: "The oil proceeds are being deposited into an account that ultimately will become a US Treasury blocked account here in the US. We will say 'this is what this money can be spent on.' They will submit to us a budget request -- 'we want to use the money on these things.'"

California Democrats have new ideas for confronting ICE: Taxes, lawsuits and location bans
The California Senate passed a bill that would make it easier to sue federal officers over civil rights violations. Recent shootings of civilians by immigration agents in Minnesota lent urgency to the measure, one of several targeting ICE.

As far as I know, Tom Suozzi here still does not have a primary challenger in his district (NY-3 on Long Island).

The filing deadline is April 6 for the primary on June 23, and if there's a remotely progressive town council member or PTA president in that district, this is the time to make a move.

Think about it like this. This ICE agent was on camera and unmasked — fulfilling one of three "demands" Democratic leader Chuck Schumer just issued in order to agree to save Republicans and give DHS even more money.

And he was still threatening to kill someone.
"You raise your voice, I erase your voice."

ICE in Minneapolis are erasing your rights.

Ilan Wurman's anti-birthright citizenship Supreme Court amicus. I won't mince words. He bastardizes the common law. It is a methodologically bankrupt approach to the history of Anglo-American constitutionalism. It is little more than preening to gain someone's favor, but certainly not a scholar's.
