Like maybe some of the people who turned out to this event my family and I attended last night. A whole lot of people, many of them elderly, came out with their homemade signs on a 95 degree day to demand food aid to Gaza in front of the Israeli Consulate.

What does this even mean? Self-identified liberal Zionists often align with those to their left (like me) on short and medium term goals. You can work with that even if you disagree with them. If you’re unwilling to, it’s not about stopping a genocide, it’s about posturing for your online buddies.

I don’t remember not knowing that dozens of my relatives died in Auschwitz and that my beloved grandmother was one of the few left. But this dude who did a high school book report on a Holocaust memoir thinks I really need to understand that the camps were very, very bad. The Jews are tired, folks.

So I actually found a way to read this damn thing and it’s…not great but also more compassionate than I expected and mostly just talks about undeniable social trends in really judgy, value-laden language. And gestures at some potentially interesting things without exploring them much. Like this.

This week’s soup is was a stew—standard red wine beef stew, but with the additions of homemade cranberry sauce and dried porcinis, which kicked it up a notch. Not winning any beauty contests but it’s given us some good fall meals. 🍽️

It’s *finally* soup season around here and I’m going to try to make at least one pot every week. This week I turned a stewing hen from the farmer’s market into a chicken soup with wild rice, carrots, parsnips, and loads of lemon and dill. 🍽️
