'Tánaiste Simon Harris has said AI is ... “here to stay” ...'

He's not wrong, you know. Technologies can't be uninvented.

What he's actually saying is that he's going to allow Generative AI vendors to do as much damage as they can to the economy and to labour.
Tánaiste Simon Harris has said AI is “no longer a concept” and is “here to stay” following a recent visit to San Francisco.

Harris said that as he travelled though San Francisco, he was “struck” by the “unavoidable reality” of how AI is “woven into daily life”.

Harris said the ‘AI moment has arrived’ and it’s ‘time for Ireland to lead’.

If you are curious, here is a detailed density map of the sun-like stars out to 1000 parsecs. It looks very different from my hot star maps. In sun-like stars, the Sun is at the edge of a peninsula-like structure that extends from the inner galaxy.

Pleased to partner with Philip Morris on our “healthy smoking in schools” initiative
We know students, like the rest of the world, are using AI. Teachers need to be equipped to deal w/all the issues AI creates. Our approach starts with maximizing safety & privacy and empowering educators to make educational decisions, so AI tools can benefit not harm www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
AI has become the norm for students. Teachers are playing catch-up.
At a New York City training session, educators explored how artificial intelligence could support teaching while also discussing their concerns around the technology.

As always, the West will dismantle itself for Israel's genocide. Now the UK is openly replacing impartial judges days before important Palestine cases wrap up, without any explanation or clarification. Any pretense of fairness in the legal system is gone.

Absolutely insane.

Labour would have purged and smeared someone like Zohran Mamdani.

Wes Streeting's politics align far more closely with Andrew Cuomo.

The lessons from Mamdani are about how to defeat both the right - and the bankrupt "centre".

Life situations are bleak right now for a lot of people. In tech, the "Venn Diagram" of (1) positive work and (2) making enough money to support your family is increasingly non-overlapping. We all do what we can.

"The more we have learned about the specifics of DNA associated with intelligence, the further away that goal has receded."
In 2018, Charles Murray challenged me to a bet: "We will understand IQ genetically—I think most of the picture will have been filled in by 2025—there will still be blanks—but we’ll know basically what’s going on." It's now 2025, and I claim a win. I write about it in The Atlantic.
Your Genes Are Simply Not Enough to Explain How Smart You Are
Seven years ago, I took a bet with Charles Murray about whether we’d basically understand the genetics of intelligence by now.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.
We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

She was arrested for holding a sign reading:

“I do not support the proscription of Palestine Action”

How that would warrant arrest is very unclear. I wonder if the police here even understand the boundaries of the bizarre law they’ve been forced to enforce.

"Political violence" is a term that exists to suggest a moral distinction between "violence against politicians" and "violence by politicians" - so that one can be condemned while the other can be normalized. Obviously, no such distinction exists in reality: violence is violence.

Our lead ship on the Global Sumud Flotilla was droned and caught fire. The six who were onboard are safe, and our mission will continue. They know international opinion is turning inexorably against them. Bombing peaceful humanitarians won’t exactly help that, but it’s the only response they’ve got.

Something that I have been thinking about with attribution of "PhD level intelligence" or "PhD level expertise" to a machine is that it reflects an increasing trend among these AI bros and their sycophants to want the products of highly skilled training without actually doing any of the work.

A list of only the confirmed children massacred by Israel's pure evil and relentless genocide in Gaza. Many estimations are that the actual amount of adults and children murdered by Israel could be double, or even triple. They will likely remain unnamed.

60,000 Gazans have been killed. 18,500 were children. These are their names.
Palestinian children have been killed at a rate of more than one per hour since the war began.

In Ireland, the Government has been urged to embed AI as a 'core component' of the education system after a study suggested that matching OECD levels of digital innovation could create 14,000 jobs and add €1.8 billion to GDP.

Who funded the study? Google. 🤔

i know this comes off as a cheap shot but I'm dead serious, this is what it looks like if you keep hitting 'Generate Next' on an LLM. AI can't really do pacing or structure, so it walks itself into disconnected conflict beats it can only resolve or drop to get back on-prompt
My good friend @opensketchbook.bsky.social says that a lot of this reads as LLM output: Tiny little conflicts that come from nowhere, contradict prior things stated, then kinda vanish?

Like, the fact that the gorn ship has both shields AND "transporter resistant" and also, we have no time to "hack"

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
