Remember kids, if you're working today, no you're not. It's Christmas Eve Eve. Put 8 hours of fake meetings on your outlook calendar. You're meeting with Santa. Take a dozen smoke breaks and feed a reindeer. Dasher and Dancer love Newports. This work week is over if you believe it is.

one thing i think about @moiradonegan.bsky.social's point is that you never hear people go from "male loneliness" -> why don't we get men involved in collective projects of meaning for the most part. instead it's usually a discussion about how society is too "feminine"

Honestly these sentiments are a little corny but it does kinda remind me of Ian McKaye talking about how the most rebellious and punk thing you can do is *not* get really fucked up and do a bunch of random vandalism and general criminal mischief cause that’s what The Man wants punks to do, man
I see people all the time with “what’s more punk than the public library” t-shorts and I have literally no idea what that is supposed to mean. What does punk mean to those people

One policy solution to Young Men we should be considering is Universal Basic Electric Guitar (UBEG). I'm not joking, by the way. Kids of any gender should get a low-cost starter kit for some hobby of their choosing once they turn 13. A camera, paints, a cheap sampler, etc.

#Carbrain isn't just assuming everyone has a car. It's also the assumption that the car is available at all times, and is safe, reliable, and gassed up. That the person is capable of driving the car at all times. That they have time to drive, have somewhere to park, and money to pay for parking.

Not an exaggeration to say that the style of chattel slavery prevalent in the Americas in the back half of the 2nd millennium is one of the worst crimes ever perpetrated against human beings in the history of our species and anybody trying to downplay it even slightly is ignorant and/or malicious.
"How bad slavery was" is worse. Much worse. Much worse than you think, much worse than you're taught, much worse than museums depict. Worse.

In the world I’m living in, the song of the summer is Stereolab’s 1992 song Low Fi

The idea that each year produces a few unofficial "songs of the summer" has been rattling around for ages. But do we have a strong contender this year?

the simplest thing any young straight man can do to get laid is not be a conservative. and I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that directly.
The left is completely silent on the subject of men getting laid - which, generally speaking, they are v.interested in doing and will continue to be interested in regardless of whether progressives want to talk about it. So the stage has been left entirely clear for the far-right.

I am so damn tired of being forced to subsidize these things that actively pollute our lungs, limit our mobility, undermine our economies, and threaten to kill us at any moment
Car buyers will now be allowed write off up to $10,000/ year in interest paid on qualifying auto loans

Car drivers can still get over $3,500 in parking tax benefits too

But, bike commuters got their $240/year benefit cut

It's not about the budget, it's a preference & subsidy for people who drive
Ugh. The megabill permanently killed commuter benefits for people who bike to work.

Last year a (pretty old) professor told me to use ChatGPT to help find case law re: specific subjects and it just invented several plausible-sounding cases from whole cloth
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

i am 100% of the belief that simply forcing take-writers to answer the question "who specifically said this and why are they significant" would result in substantially fewer bad takes circulating in the world
if i ever teach a class on argumentative writing i am going to use these paragraphs as an example of how to NOT write persuasively for an audience.

imo this is accurate, but the reason this is so insane is: the mass affluent society is there IN LARGE PART DUE TO THE BUREAUCRACY. It employs people. It generates huge demand for white collar goods and services and creates whole new markets for them. Not even getting into the services it provides!
The gamble is essentially Americans are rich enough, or at least there’s a plurality of middle class/petite bourgeois people who are rich enough, to where they can repeal the 20th century without arousing the anger of the larger public.

“They apparently just sort of walked past security and said: ‘Get out of my way,’ and they’re looking for access for the IT systems, as they have in other agencies,” said a former Noaa official. “They will have access to the entire computer system, a lot of which is confidential information.”

I say this with many of you knowing already, but as a person who actually has cared about the budget and spending, I want to lose my mind every time someone says "We don't know where the money is going".

Each agency publishes pretty simple to read reports about disbursement!
Malliotakis: We try to get to the bottom of where this money is going, $50 million for condoms in Gaza, for example. These are real things!

Phillip: We know that there was not $50 million spent for condoms in Gaza. There was $0 spent on condoms in the Middle East. That is a complete lie
