Something the US needs to accept too is that without a large-scale correction imposing consequences on a large number of people, the crisis of governance here will continue indefinitely

The thing to make it about was the lawless authoritarianism. Just like last week’s elections were.
They were never going to get ACA subsidies, which is part of why it was a mistake to insist this was only about ACA subsidies and nothing else.
Sincere question: does anybody have any evidence that the GOP/WH would have eventually folded and extended the ACA subsidies if the shutdown continued?

I haven’t seen any. The President didn’t seem to feeling any pressure. No GOP Senator AFAIK expressed any concern. (Some Reps did)

Assume all the yes and no votes from Dem senators are strategic and not sincere votes. The party caucus made a decision. No way to know how many were in favor. Then the caucus decided who would vote yes and no based on what would protect each of them politically the most. That’s how this works.

I thought the shutdown was the fight, did I get that wrong
Democrats have been fighting for months to address America's healthcare crisis

For the millions who will lose coverage
For people with cancer who won't get the care they need
For working families who can't afford to pay $25K more a year for healthcare

We will keep fighting

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

Always blew my mind that our wet bitch Dems immediately would get up there and be like "I'm working across the aisle" it's like no man, we won, the people want these ideas so get on board and I will protect you from the people trying to fuck that up for all of us
Holy shit. Neither Cuomo nor Sliwa would have went after Trump, maybe ever but Zohran is doing it as soon as he has the office.

Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

Really disheartening that the Democratic Party doesn't seem to understand that there is no such thing as "voters in the middle."

There are cross-pressured voters and you reach them by wedging, not by pandering to some non-existent median voter.
Ultimately their argument is that base-mobilization doesn't work, and the only way to win elections is to appeal to swing voters by talking about "kitchen table issues."

Dems just need "a more appealing agenda, set of priorities, and message."

Literally zero awareness that it is not 1993 anymore.

you know it is not at all difficult to acknowledge the legitimate concerns about the tattoo and still make a case for the candidate. but this would require maturity, a perspective outside ones own and a willingness to lose a little face, which means it won’t happen.

But secondly, I actually thought it was interesting to see the range of demands and what motivated people to come out on Saturday

Like some people's signs said abolish ICE, some said leave queer kids alone, some said stop funding genocide, some said stop stealing medical research funding, etc etc

You have to be willing to walk away from these guys if they let you down, just as a matter of basic self respect. It's not a fandom. You're hiring them to do a job or not.
I liked the Platner ads too but I think there's a difference between "guy who had some bad reddit posts a decade ago" and "ex-Blackwater merc who still has a Nazi tattoo." Sucks bigtime that he's the only one taking positions and talking policy I like, but them's the breaks!

there's plenty of time to build backing for an alternative candidate for those who think Mills is too old or too cautious - if Platner has the courage to drop out soon rather than lingering like a bad smell. the primary is next June!

Political parties must shift immediately and dramatically to the left to avoid alienating these frustrated and abandoned young women. Am I doing this right?
Our recent poll found that women 28 and younger skew substantially more left than the national average. Nearly 80 percent of Gen Z women want abortion to be legal and seven in 10 want gender-affirming care to be accessible for trans adults.
Gen Z women are the most liberal group in the country

god damn it, i promised myself that i wouldn't throw away money on other states' senate campaigns anymore.

these motherfuckers are going to force me to donate to platner for the maine democratic primary
🚨 The DSCC — led by Kirsten Gillibrand, Mark Kelly, Adam Schiff, and Lisa Blunt Rochester — has formed a joint fundraising committee with Janet Mills.

Mills, running against Graham Platner in the Maine Democratic Senate primary, would become the oldest freshman (79) ever elected, to a 6-year term.

Durbin on whether Democrats can use reining in ICE in Chicago as a precondition to rein in the government says “can’t do that. It’s gotta be health care all the way.”
