Ah, this is nice. I was Ginger on Making Light, and still am. Veterinarian, invertebrate punster, openly sarcastic, happily married lesbian mom and grandma, ruled by cats. I speak a few languages, but am hard-of-hearing in all of them. Fully vaccinated.

The Wall Street Journal is now walking back its earlier reporting that "transgender ideology" messages were found on the shooter's ammunition.

But it's too late. That story is all around the country and the world. Most who have read it will not see the update.

Thanks, WSJ.

Russ Vought set up a CFPB snitch line where you can report any work by the agency still trying to do its job as legally mandated by Congress. It would be a real shame if this was flooded with false tips and wild goose chases...

The cool thing about the late night comedians is that Trump watches and obsesses over them. And that it eats him up.

I believe it. Those “HR” emails ring all the phishing bells we’re trained on, which is why a majority of us have not replied and have reported the emails as phishing. Phuck them.
I posted this earlier today but the original post was deleted, but here it is again in screencap form, about the probably not actually legal shenanigans the new administration is up to at the office of personnel management:

Veterinarian: This is the wrong cup — where’s that urine sample Mx Smith brought in today?
optimist: The cup is half full.

pessimist: The cup is half empty.

professional microblogger: Look, the thing you have to understand about cups is... well, let's go back to the beginning, and buckle up because this is going to be a long one.

This thread explains human genders very nicely. I remember learning these as an undergraduate in an advanced genetics seminar.
In 1890, the X and Y chromosomes were discovered. It was found that the men who were tested had 46 chromosomes, including an X and a Y, while women who were tested also had 46 chromosomes, including 2 X chromosomes.
So obviously the conclusion was that the Y chromosome defined masculinity.

Just introduced my wife to the brilliant Parable books (her mind was *blown*). Highly recommended.
The Handmaid's Tale is a good book. But did you know that there's a book written by a Black woman about a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and societal decline. The book was published in 1993, but is set in 2024 following a presidential election 👀 #BookSky #BlackBookSky

and a dead friend you’ve never met

and a missing friend you’re wishing well, hoping they’re ok, you’ve never met them, you likely never will, but you’re hoping they’re ok.
If you're gen x or millennial, odds are you have known some people online for *decades*. Across multiple now-dead forums, across vast gulfs of time in internet years. You've probably got a friend group that outlived multiple sites.

Shout out to the good folks at Blue Ridge Public Radio (based in Asheville, NC). They’ve battled power outages in the past 48hrs but have stayed on the air throughout most of the storm and flooding. If you live in western North Carolina, they’re a great resource for news and emergency info.

Perfection. My NYC-born heart is frelling.
The unspoken social contract in NYC involves three things: you do not demonstrate that you perceive anyone around you unless you have to, you do not impede the flow of pedestrian traffic, and you do not waste anyone's time. That's the definition of politeness!

I’m a nonpartisan election official in North Carolina. Take it from me: vote at early voting (One-Stop). They can fix ANYTHING. They can register you on the spot, even. Take your ID, go midweek to early voting, and you won’t have to stress. On Election Day, your and my options are limited.

Veterinarian: this cup? That’s not water.
Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Marine biologist: there is not enough water in the cup to be suitable habitat for a shark
Optimist: the cup is ½ full

Pessimist: the cup is ½ empty

Land and climate expert trained in counterfactuals: ok, how much water was in the cup yesterday? How much was in the cup last year? And how much was originally in the cup before humans started altering it for drinking purposes?
