I spent most of last night writing up the rules for the card game I am designing, mostly so I can give it to a friend to play test. No idea whether the game itself will be fun, but the mental exercise of designing a game is fun

The Andrew Little situation strongly implies he just confidently assumed he could manage Chung fine, and put zero thought into it beyond that.

Which means he also just assumed Tory Whanau was doing a bad job when he could cruise through.

And that's disrespectful/racist/sexist as shit. #nzpol

Some opposition MP should put a "Regulatory Standards Act Repeal Bill" into the biscuit tin, approach the NZ First backbench MPs to sign on in support of it, and then see what happens if it gets pulled from the lottery ... NZ First didn't promise not to vote to repeal it once enacted!
Winston Peters vows to repeal Regulatory Standards Bill; David Seymour hits back
"We did our best to neutralise its adverse effects and we will campaign at the next election to repeal it," Peters told Radio Waatea.

It’s kind of astounding how many people read this article and went “Shame on the publisher for being so cheap to use AI covers!” when the issue is that the publisher paid for designed covers, only to find out that the designer cheated them
A new ruling on AI means the Ockhams are in the strange position of judging a book by its cover

I live in a time when "a cabal of pedophiles runs the country" and "the national media have been engaging in a multi a year long conspiracy to end democracy" are factual statements and I want a refund
About the same time the NYT sat on a scoop tying Trump to Epstein, Maggie Haberman was downright giddy (y'all) about NYT promoting an anti-Hillary Clinton book.

Any other time, any other President, and "the dude was in a global conspiracy to fuck them kids" would have been 24/7 coverage. Even Dubya.

I remember the fucking Lewinsky coverage. Our media have become craven hacks carrying water for rich pedophiles and I feel insane typing that but there it is.

I'm doing an interview for a Turkish sociology journal by email, and its fascinating because the questions are good but my answers will be translated into Turkish. So I have to be careful in how I phrase things in order to forestall potential ambiguities that the translators would need to deal with.

a concept i talk about a lot with the guy i'm seeing is "fast thinking", which is like low-grade, shallow, and easily disposable pop intellectualism. key hallmarks include focusing on discourse over substance, not being able to separate similar form from different content, and "annoying = evil"
legitimately i think one of the core failings of centrist pundits is that they have come to define themselves by what they are against--to chart their intellectual course by who they think is being annoying this week--instead of by recourse to genuine principle

emailing in a semi-literate manner isn’t a sign of stupidity, it’s another form of rich asshole arrogance because you don’t think you owe anyone coherent thoughts

The problem with the fourth #ParamormalActivity film is that it’s just a sequence of footage. Ostensibly it’s found footage, but there’s no hook this time, no contrivance to explain how it comes from a single source. It’s just events that have been filmed

DNA scientist James Watson has a remarkably long history of sexist, racist public comments
“People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty,” he said in 2003. “I think it would be great.”
