It used to be that Google was a surveillance advertising company that tried to be a good corporate citizen, despite the inherent contradictions there. That went out the window a while ago. At the same time, the core product (search) has become worse and worse, while competitors have gotten better.

This is a textbook example of how infrastructure built to monitor exceptional circumstances (football games with 100,000 attendees) can easily be co-opted into becoming a tool of political surveillance.
