Q: "What exactly is Steam policy on mature content?"

A: "Nobody really knows. It's important to note that HORSES' ban has nothing to do with the recent restriction on adult content pushed by payment processors; this decision was solely in the hands of Steam's curatorial team."
Our upcoming game HORSES was preemptively banned from Steam, with no path to appeal. The game will still launch next week on December 2nd and will be available on EGS, GOG, Humble, and Itch for $4.99. Here is a detailed FAQ covering what happened: horses.wtf/BannedFromSt...

And that's why I feel using it as a foundation is wrong. You still need to understand anatomy, form, composition, perspective, etc. in order to make use of these models, and not just end up with samey flat artwork. Compare the 3d base I used for last year's summer image for example.

Key takeaway of 2025: Bluesky is an enormous activism force that punches above its weight. The paypros censorship stuff? This site is the one that’s getting us to the 20 yard line. The initial interest in the summer hasn’t returned to Twitter, whereas Bluesky is now the de facto source on this issue

My dream as the programmer, writer, designer, and director on SuccuDeck is for an artist to get so inspired by the gameplay they want to help by making 50 to 60 card art images

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

This is your regular reminder that the most bang-for-your-buck marketing you can do for your indie game is to improve your store page. No social media comes even *close* to the traffic that a well-designed page brings in
I dunno if it also happens to other devs, but my social media presence outside of TikTok sucks so bad.

I don't really get many interactions here or on Tumblr. Makes me wonder if I should even bother posting here and just focus on Itch and TikTok or what.

The part about "Valve not giving keys to devs who do not pass an unspecified threshold of sales" combined with "Indies lose 30% of sales to Valve while big studios get individual, cheaper deals" should tell you everything you need to know about Valve's opinion of indie devs.

Valve is a libertarian company. They purposefully obfuscate their rules about adult games to prevent people from skirting them. But tracer bullets, like "Horses", still tell us a lot about the general shape of their rules. And that shape is "don't make us do effort"
valve and steam are probably the greatest success story in all of gaming but their incredibly opaque nature and breadth of control are a sword of damocles hanging over devs. Every developer bar nintendo wants their game on steam, and steam's rules are on a whiteboard at Valve's HQ and nowhere else.

Vile used images of real people in an adult game to make an artistic statement. Doesn't matter that these are images of the author, and that the context is "sexual violence is bad". Valve banned that game because their overarching principle is "do not make us do effort"
There's a growing number of games that have apparently fallen foul of Steam's 'No because we say so' rule that are still being happily sold on other major storefronts like GOG.

Also recently DreadXP-published game Vile was outright rejected by Steam too, despite containing *nothing* objectionable.

As an adult gamedev, none of "Horses" sounds problematic except that the men are naked. That puts the Scrutiny Meter up to eleven, and if you then have a scene with a naked woman and a clothed daughter, Valve will reach for the Ban Hammer

If you don't get that the "yucky porn games" are the gateway to censor further media that YOU personally think is acceptable, you need to get your head out of your ass. They're trying to divide people into smaller groups so their collective power is also smaller. Kill the cop in your head.
Already seeing folks say, "Well, HORSES isn't YUCKY PORN like other games are, so..." which is super frustrating.

Now is NOT the time to be throwing the hentai games you happen not to like under the bus. Your rage should be directly at payment processors.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Heartbroken because I checked the quotes on this & saw a 19-year-old saying "I agree with protesting against paypros but I don't want to support horse porn" but I didn't get a screencap & now they've deleted
seeing people being like "ehhh Idkkkkk horses DOES sound kinda icky, I get why it was banned" like barely 2 months after a bunch of people kicked up the wildest possible hostile campagn against _itch_ makes me feel like I'm losing my mind lol

There is a binary ratings system for adult games: Banned and Not Yet
one of the things i keep thinking about with the steam situation is booktok/tube discourse about whether books have too much porn now (they call it spice which i just can't you sound like duncan idaho) and if there should be enforced labelling or a rating system

"Jobs don't exist anymore" is a phrase I've repeated to myself a lot. No idea what the hell most of you do all day but if someone is paying you to do it, hold on for dear life, because if it goes away it feels like it's probably not coming back. Either that or I'm just particularly unemployable.
“Stella why do you put up with x or y” what would you like me to do man. I was unemployed for 18 of the last 36 months. Jobs don’t exist anymore. We take what we can get now, warts and all.

I think Demonschool is a good video game but I think Brandon’s approach to how staff worked together and were credited REALLY deserves a lot of attention. Video game crediting is a stupid black box and transparency will help average people understand these roles.
demonschool credits all 145 people who touched the game over the course of its multi-year dev cycle AND explains what exactly they contributed. the rest of the games industry, which commonly omits people from credits entirely, should be taking notes
