Again, can you imagine if a writer of color, a Black reporter specifically, did what Olivia Nuzzi did, what would happen to her career?

Would she be rehabilitated in less than a year? Hired by Vanity Fair? Given a book deal? A NYT puff piece?

It's a big club and we ain't in it.

the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

I’ve mentioned this before but even if we somehow unite the center and far left and get minorities and men back none of that will change the fact that much of our media apparatus, legacy and independent, is staffed by stupid fucking dipshit babies
full disclosure: I've beefed with talmon for a while now because he's an economics reporter at the NYT with no training in the subject (and frankly, no knowledge of it despite years writing about it) and has, among other things, literally told *actual economists* that vibes matter more than data

I think “we protest Harris because we’d get arrested if we protested Trump” is rational, but I feel like you can’t say that and also expect people to treat said protesting as an especially brave or noble act then.

The peer pressure of social media becomes extremely clear whenever anyone talks about Kamala or Hillary.

Every single reply is almost always prefaced with a "Look, Hillary wasn't perfect, but she was right, yada yada." "Harris isn't perfect, but she ran a great campaign etc. etc."
The man predicted the future and he told you exactly how it was going to happen, too

The media will never hold “normal” politicians accountable if they’re barely capable of doing that for the Trump Administration

Unserious morons who treat politics as a content farm instead of something with real consequences and then congratulate themselves for their “bravery”

You set the house on fire, watched it burn, and then lost your nerve and put it out. You now have a partially burned house. Great job.

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

Listen, the Biden Dead-Enders were wrong but they also had LITERALLY ZERO influence in anything, while you, a “Serious Journalist” had some and chose to completely ignore the enormous risks.

Just no self-introspection at all. I hope you enjoy what you helped influence.
Not even a little bit. This take has been vindicated 1000-fold. Biden dead-enders probably cost Democrats the election.

Trump voters are stupid but this episode has been the American elite (media, business, politics) being deeply, deeply stupid and completely unserious.

The voters kind of get a pass when their information system is so f’d. the elites who had a hand in screwing it up? Absolute morons.
really underrated how much these rich guys know jack shit about politics
funny how Jeff Bezos pivoted to " We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets" thinking that would be obviously pro-trump

Gods, just grant journalists the ability to do SOME introspection on the big part they had in enabling Trump.
A big reason why we’re here is Trump has long spoken like he honestly believes trade deficits are some sort of fee America pays and should retaliate against and most people in the media were like “he can’t actually mean that, that’s way too stupid” so they covered him like he meant something else.
I tried to simplify it to my kid like this: you buy something at the store for $50. Then Trump says that store stole $50 from you so he's going to tax the store $25. Store now charges $75.

A day later, I’m now convinced Schumer’s biggest failure was not expecting House GOP to be that united and essentially had no contingency plan for it.

Certainly explains all the terrible comms strat the past day or so.

Oh this is the case he’s absolutely let down his caucus and gotta go.
Regardless of where D cloture votes shake out, I think senate Ds picked a strategy that relied on Johnson failing to deliver a house bill and they got caught with their pants down when he did.

With the knowledge Johnson would pass this, they needed to have publicized specific demands ~2-3 weeks ago

FWIW I think the backlash has been intense enough that there’s an above zero percent chance senators reverse course here

I think it’s probably still ~5% or so, but keep calling and keep yelling

I really don’t think they anticipated this, which is another indictment of their political instincts

Once that’s done you have to COMMIT. You’re already in a lose-lose situation. At that point your caucus has to stay united and jump into hell together. But he watched them jump in and after they burned, said “nuh-uh, I rather not”

this, plus hanging patty murray out to dry, plus failing to communicate his position *last week before everyone stuck their necks out* are all reasons the caucus has to can him as leader, regardless of what happens with cloture
Jeffries called in a rep sick with cancer and a rep giving birth (IIRC) to vote against the CR and maybe Schumer could have let them know about this plan on the down low before they upended their lives to vote against something he was always going to push over the finish line.

There’s a ton of hindsight-motivated thinking now. Based on the information earlier there was no way to predict this. House Dems were united and so many conservative Senate Dems were saying no.

That so many people were LEGITIMATELY BLINDSIDED by this, is the reason why this was dumb by Schumer.
"earlier you said", yes, motherfuckers, i know, this is the entire point of starting a post with "i'll eat shit", there are a lot of people who should fucking learn to say that, but i am not one of them.
i'll eat shit, i genuinely did not think schumer would force members of the caucus to go out on limbs for days and then fuck them, even if i think he makes good arguments for it. incredibly poor leadership, and i don't think he can lead the caucus, especially if we ever get the majority back.
