OpenAI says they aren't liable for the suicide of a user their chat bot urged to kill himself because suicide is a violation of the TOS
Additionally, OpenAI argues its not liable because Raine, by using ChatGPT for self-harm, broke its terms of service

This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

Buy Gillis's book! It's a blatantly anarchist defense of science—not as an institution, but as a practice—and gossipy recounting of academic drama that has implications lasting to today. It covers grifters, medical woo-ry, ableism, transphobia, abuse, conspiracy theorists, and so much more.

I look forward when we have better alternatives than this braindead slopulism ("if ignorant, mean people like it then we must do it") and neo-elitism ("Bring Back Gatekeeping, you must get this much on a standardized test to have an opinion")
There's a particularly noxious strain of implicit populism running through these discussions, left and centre (tho in slightly different ways), which simply cannot conceive of bad ideas emerging from or thriving in an authentic, grassroots, democratic and/or radical space.

“what if they change their mind later” is never asked about cis kids going through puberty, even though they might be trans, which reveals that cis people view transness as a defect
The only truly irreversible thing a trans child is likely to do is take their own life. "What if they do something irreversible?" actually means "theyre not allowed to make a decision!"

You cant undo or reverse any decision you make, you can simply change your mind later and handle the consequences

Dr. Fatima did not start her video strong when her video critiquing technocracy started with pointing out that the US government is close to tech CEOs, none of whom are actually scientists. Technocracy sucks tbc, but the relationship between scientists and tech CEOs is largely antagonistic.

At least with Waymo, what they’re saying makes sense and given their track record so far, they seem to be taking safety seriously. Unlike other people pursing self-driving cars. Not saying I like Waymo, but how to handle fatal crashes is a basic question ethicists have been grappling with for awhile
