Some fun with lady Belted Kingfisher today. I found a good spot for them. Thinking about actually dragging a tripod with me next time out. 🪶

One of the reasons why this weekend's storm system is looking so impressive is that the associated airmass will be among the moistest on record for November in SoCal, with record or near-record column water vapor and integrated vapor transport in some areas. #CAwx

Billionaires have to defend their billions by every means possible. It's why they attack trans people, immigrants, poor people, sick people, vaccinated people etc... They try everything they can to distract as many as they can from the fact they are stealing the sweat of our labor.

This is an excellent debrief from the LA Public Press on the toll that five months of covering ICE has had on their small newsroom. Michelle is a friend and she's doing absolutely crucial work at LAPP.
When your local reporter needs the same protection as a war correspondent.

Five months of covering ICE raids taught our small LA newsroom hard lessons — and we’re still figuring out how to sustain it.

in Paris, I had to see a same-day doctor & I found one. was gravely warned that, as a foreigner, I’d have to pay 32 euros & I laughed & laughed

a friend there said “make sure you get X kind of doctor, not Y, because the Y kind charges 74 WHOLE EUROS” & once again I bitterly, bitterly laughed 😭
My ACA current plan is going from $385/mo to $821/mo.

Since January, Trump's Treasury has quietly gutted enforcement of the corporate alternative minimum tax — a huge boon for big business and wealthy investors.

Meanwhile, he's led an all-out assault on Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs that help the poor.

Stats came out recently that 2024 had no major blockbuster films directed by a woman. I do not believe this is about the momentum of MeToo running out, this is about targeted backlash to women as a result of speaking up.
In the years after the Me Too movement, it seemed like there was finally an open forum to have urgent discussions on the prevalence of sexual violence on university campuses. But that momentum has faded with the pandemic, austerity, and rising conservatism.

Without enough brothers to fill their houses, some fraternities have begun renting rooms to non-students desperate for cheap rent. The results have been messy.

I’m just saying, I directed a movie for basically no money that debuted in the 90s on rotten tomatoes and got distribution with no stars attached, I did not get a single call and couldn’t even find a rep as a director. This was not the case for any of the male directors I went to AFI with.
She's absolutely right. As a producer with several films in development with female directors, I can say it is an absolute uphill battle to get execs to fund their projects. Great scripts are sitting on shelves while a generation of our most talented women sit idle.

As SNAP hangs in the balance for nearly 42 million people, misinformation is rampant. Myths of laziness and fraud persist when we should be talking about too low wages for workers, income inequality, and our threadbare social safety net.

In this guest post, Adam Chandler sorts fact from fiction:
SNAP benefits feed essential needs while still leaving many hungry for more
Journalist and author Adam Chandler explains what so much of the conversation about them gets wrong.
