Mourning dove is looking worse for the rain, and not pleased. 🪶

Yes, I HAD to bring in the recently found Sphinx moth caterpillar until the weather breaks ☺️. It’s just a hair under three inches long. It is in the second story ‘condo’ just above the Western swallowtail caterpillar. Frass pellets are accumulating. #invertes 🦋🐛

An adult Cooper’s hawk is standing on a wet metal tube fence in light rain. The bird is looking to our left and we can see the dark gray feathers on top of its head. That is the Cooper’s Cap that helps to identify this hawk from the similar looking Sharp-shinned hawk that has dark gray also running down the back of its head and neck.

California native wildflowers called Woolly Bluecurls (Trichostema lanatum). They smell amazing like a Logan berry/Grape mix and are a known native American medicine. Boil the plant, breathe the steam to clear congestion.

On and off light rain this morning and the hummingbirds have decided the feeders in this corner are the ones to gather at. Mostly Anna’s and Allen’s that I can tell, a couple nice gorget flashes.
I think the native Toyon tree gives them fast cover if needed. There are few ripe clusters of berries. 🪶
A couple dozen hummingbirds are getting refreshments at four feeders on a rainy day. A dozen or so hummingbirds are getting refreshments at two feeders on a rainy day. A couple clusters of red ripe berries can be seen on a native California tree just behind the feeders. The tree is a toyon and the trees also grow on the hills by Hollywood. The red berries reminded pearly settlers of holly berries and the name Hollywood was given to the area we now think of for movies and movie stars. Or so it has been said.
