Across the UK, thousands of children are still being denied the fair education every child deserves – shut out of local schools because their families are the ‘wrong’ faith, or hidden away in illegal ones with no real lessons at all.

Straight from the cenotaph to Tavistock Square for the white poppy ceremony for peace. Happy to lay a poppy at the stone for conscientious objectors, so many of whom also have died as a result of war.

So many precious and unique lives have been lost to war, whether noble sacrifices in a great cause for democracy and freedom, or wasted in squalid skirmishes for ignoble reasons. Today at the cenotaph I thought of them as well as committing to work for peace and human rights for all people.

Alongside my poppy at the cenotaph this year, I’ll be wearing the red triangle to remember the liberation 80 years ago of humanists who were held in the camps wearing this badge like other political opponents of fascism. We must have courage to stand against fascism and for freedom in every age.

We will remember everyone.

Everyone who fought, who lived, who died, and every conscientious objector, too.

We will remember their sacrifice.

We will remember their belief in freedom, and the common humanity that unites us.

Deeply disappointing that the Committee has chosen not to hear directly from terminally ill people or from families who have supported loved ones through assisted deaths abroad. A missed opportunity to truly reflect the needs and wishes of those most affected.

Remembrance is a time for unity as we honour the courage & humanity of all who have served. This weekend, humanist representatives will take part in ceremonies across the UK. Our Chief Exec, Andrew Copson, will represent the non-religious at the National Service of Remembrance, held at the Cenotaph.
It will be a privilege this #RemembranceDay to stand again for Defence Humanists and @humanists.uk at the cenotaph. I will be thinking of the pity of war, the necessity of peace, of all the brave people who have fought for it whether in uniform or as civilians, and of those who grieve.

Good. Now for Westminster. Having 26 bishops with automatic voting rights as a special privilege because of the Church’s place in our constitution is a hangover from 14th century medieval England. In a modern democracy, no religious group should have reserved seats.
