Good news for DC: the Senate just voted 53-43 to confirm Stephen Rickard, Elana Suttenberg, & John Truong to serve as DC Superior Court Judges through 2040—this will fill 3 of the 12 existing vacancies on the court. 2 more vacancies coming in Jan. though: www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

It's been six months since we lost Mark and Melissa Hortman. We miss them both so much. This is a lovely tribute to our leader, our Speaker, and our dear friend.

Melissa devoted her life to making Minnesota a better place for anyone and everyone. We will never stop working to honor her legacy.

Interesting: Trump may just have legalized recreational weed sales in D.C.

A congressional rider has banned those sales in D.C. since 2015. But it specifically references Schedule I drugs, which weed was. With Trump rescheduling marijuana, the rider may no longer apply.

All student debt should be canceled. All medical debt should be canceled. All K-12 school lunch debt should be canceled. These are all debts that don't exist in most nations.

Two folks I've already heard might be interested in this appointment: Former councilmember Elissa Silverman and Lisa Rice, the lead backer of Initiative 83.
I just asked @chmnmendelson.bsky.social about the process, and he says he's already had people reach out to him about getting the interim appointment to McDuffie's seat. Now, remember: They can't be registered Democrats.

Tonight I went to my sister-in-laws Christmas concert in Cranston, Rhode Island as I have been going every year. Tonight the priest a announced that the doors would be locked in 15 minutes for the duration of the concert. The Brown University shooter has not been found.

Gotta say it's mindblowing to me that the Brown shooter is still at large and they don't even seem to have identified who they're looking for.

Bonds' bill is going down. Ranked-choice voting will happen in 2026 in D.C.

The D.C. Council is now starting to debate the emergency bill from Councilmember Anita Bonds that would delay the rollout of ranked-choice voting beyond next year.

"Does the city have adequate time to educate and demonstrate?" asks Bonds, a longtime skeptic of ranked-choice voting.

This week I introduced the Safe Community Places and Policing Amendment Act of 2025. This bill ensures the District's policies reflect our values and public safety priorities by prohibiting personnel from engaging in immigration enforcement without a judicial warrant or court order.

Two weeks ago, the Council heard heartbreaking testimonies from residents about the toll that the District's collaboration has taken on local families and neighbors.

We must do more to protect our community.
“The collaboration between MPD and federal agents does not make our communities safer. The agents that tear our families apart are the same agents that are racially profiling our Black neighbors.” Oliver Merino, Immigrant Legal Resource Center.

Just want to share with my American friends how the Australians respond to a shooting tragedy. Action, rather than thoughts and prayers.

I do just want to repeat there is zero reason this can’t happen in the U.S.

Australia has it a bit easier because it is expected now but a single member of Congress could begin forcing debate on this.

Just one.
I'm reading a piece about how Australia is already tightening its gun laws, less than 48 hours after the Bondi Beach shooting. The piece points out that 64% of Aussies favor stricter gun laws.

So do 60% of Americans, but our elected reps don't give a damn.

In the wake of the Brown shooting, I get the outrage over children experiencing multiple school shootings. It is an outrage.

AND, there are generations of Black youth who have grown up surrounded by gun violence, losing multiple friends and family members, ignored (or vilified) by the rest of us.

Trump wants DC's crime numbers to be high so he can seize power here and look legitimate while he does it.

If DC's numbers aren't what he wants, he's willing to go back and erase them.

The draft report says the main reason “for the misclassifications is a culture of coercive fear that emanates from Pamela A. Smith” and some of her staff.

The last time I called Gillibrand's office they told me (AGAIN) they were trying to get her to do town halls with constituents.

When I suggested she might never get my vote, they told me they understand and to vote my conscience.

It's kind of haunting me.

This is the normal for our children. The 21st century in America has seen weakening gun laws and soaring gun sales. Two of the many challenges of our time are to reverse this trend and heal our children’s trauma.
so far tonight msnbc has interviewed two students from brown university that are also survivors of separate high school shootings.

There’s an urgent need for blood in the aftermath of the Brown University shooting

If you can give, please do

If you can’t, please spread the word

Its terrifying to think how bad this shooting might be if they need an urgent call for blood, but the more people donating the more lives we can save
I am a student at Brown in communication with a friend at RIBC.

There is an urgent need for blood donations to support RI. Donations in NY, NJ, MN, NB, DE or NJ can help supply RI.
