"You’re coming here not knowing the first thing about D.C.’s budget process and fiscal situation, and Republicans in Congress think they know better than D.C.’s elected officials about these very technical local tax and budget decisions," said McGovern.

NEWS: In a letter to congressional leaders, D.C. CFO Glen Lee says that if Congress repeals a D.C. bill decoupling the city's tax code from some of the Republican tax changes, he may have to suspend tax filing season — possibly for several months.

During my oldest daughter’s second winter, my husband was working a late shift and the cold dark evenings alone with a toddler felt pretty long. More than a few times, we dressed up and went to free shows at the Millennium Stage. The long busy hallways of the Kennedy Center delighted my new walker.

and furthermore, it’s very clear that the two most important political tests for the senate in 2029 once we take it will be:

1. expanding the Supreme Court

2. Admitting PR/DC as states
imo just mechanically vote for whichever Senate candidate promises most clearly to destroy the filibuster

Groundhog Day is tomorrow, and Congressional Republicans are celebrating by once again coming for DC's local money. This time they seek to undo local tax code changes that help working families, because I guess they want to make their tyranny as obvious as possible?

How to take action to #FreeDC ⬇️
DC’s money belongs to DC — Free DC
In December, DC Council opted to keep our local tax code independent from drastic federal tax changes that would have led to shortfalls without quick action. Every state has the option to do this, and...

There's a runoff in Texas's 18th congressional district tomorrow and the only two candidates on the ballot are Democrats, so Democrats will pick up a seat...whenever Mike Johnson chooses to swear in the winner that is.

What to expect in Texas' 18th Congressional District special runoff election
With only two Democrats on the ballot, the party is guaranteed to at least temporarily narrow the slim Republican majority in the House.

There's been absolutely no public hearing on this bill, no chance for D.C. residents to weigh in on whether it should be left to their elected officials to determine tax policy or unaccountable members of Congress. (The bill was quietly introduced on January 22.)
It looks like the House is indeed voting on H.J. Res. 142 next week, which would nullify the "D.C. Income and Franchise Tax Conformity and Revision Temporary Amendment Act of 2025," costing the District government *$224 million* in the current FY 2026...

Last year Congress blew a $1.1 billion hole in DC's budget. Now they're trying to do it again.

Two new bills are attempting to take away nearly $700M of DC's own local tax money. They're anti-democratic, anti-family, and wrong.

Here are four ways you can help stop them: freedcproject.org/money

There are many rumors going around about a large operation targeting Haitians in Springfield whose TPS is going to be stripped from them next week; we do not know if they are true, but the community is preparing nonetheless.

Notably, expect court decisions ASAP in pending cases to save TPS.

Best believe #FreeDC will be at this markup next Wednesday. Congress, a body in which DC has no representation, is attempting to overturn our local tax law. Taxation without representation… I feel like there’s a history lesson in there somewhere?
A couple of interesting details here: it looks like Mayor Bowser returned this temporary bill to the DC Council unsigned on Dec. 19 (with no explanation provided); the 30-day congressional review period will end around February 12; and the Senate can pass this with 51 votes…

🚨As if DC didn’t already have enough to deal with, today we learned the Senate and House will vote next wk on SJ Res. 102 and HJ Res. 142 to disapprove a bill to decouple provisions of DC’s tax code from the feds.

This would blow a $820 MILLION hole through the financial plan!

ICE & CBP have been out kidnapping people in Los Angeles every day since June. The media has moved on and acts like this isn’t still happening. The crises are ongoing. Solidarity with the people fighting back in Minneapolis and everywhere.
please remember that no matter how many “ICE is losing in MN” articles you read today, there is still a very real, urgent, ongoing crisis in Minnesota.

UPDATE: After seeing this video, I informed ICE of my intent to visit the Baltimore facility today. I was told I would be denied entry.

It’s clear Trump's ICE would rather engage in a cover up. I will not stop pressing until we get answers. We need transparency & accountability.
Like many of you, I have seen this video, and I'm demanding answers.

My team has reached out to ICE repeatedly and have yet to get clear answers.
