As I told the @washingtonpost.com, the Trump Administration's attempted takeover of DC isn't being done *for* us, it's being done *to* us. And if we let it succeed, they will take this playbook and run it in blue cities around the country. We have to stop it here

One week after a horrific mass shooting at Brown and less than one month after a mass shooting of patriotic National Guard members in DC, the Trump Administration is suing DC to make it easier for violent criminals to shoot as many DC residents as quickly as possible. Disgusting
BREAKING: The Trump administration is suing D.C. over its ban on semi-automatic (AR-15) weapons.

DOJ's Civil Rights Division under Harmeet Dhillon is seeking a court ruling that D.C.'s law "prohibiting registration of the AR-15 by law-abiding citizens violates the Second Amendment."

This is the second Republican bill introduced in the past two months to rename a DC street after Charlie Kirk. Among the many reasons we need DC statehood is to stop members of Congress from wasting their time on DC local matters that their constituents could care less about
GOP Rep. Nancy Mace just introduced a bill to redesignate Black Lives Matter Plaza in front of the White House as “Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza”

The bill requires at least two Metro-style signs be erected with the name.

I am so happy to see a judge recognize that the Trump Administration's racial profiling, harassment, and kidnapping of Latino and immigrant Washingtonians is blatantly illegal. We must put an end to this inhumane attack on our city, and this is a good first step
A federal judge ruled that federal agents have to scale back the warrantless arrests of immigrants that have been happening in D.C.

“They’ve been roaming around arresting people who appear Latino without any regard of who they are," says an attorney.

Federal judge limits warrantless immigration arrests in D.C.
Lawyers say federal agents unlawfully operated under an ‘arrest first, ask questions later’ policy.

Today, the House Oversight Committee met its solemn responsibility to conduct oversight of the Trump Administration's illegal actions.... just kidding, they spent time debating what doctrine DC's local courts should employ when interpreting DC's local administrative regulations

The last-gasp effort to delay / stop RCV is now almost certain to fail. That means that RCV is indeed coming to DC starting with the June primary! I'm so glad that DC voters get to move to an election system that gives us more voice and more choice
And with that, Felder's withdrawn the bill. He says he'll bring it up at the next meeting, but if there's a cost attached it's probably sunk. He can try moving this as a normal bill, without the emergency's requirements, but that starts to get very tricky timing-wise...
This bill is up for a vote today, but a wrinkle: The CFO may rule it will cost the elections board money to implement so it would be ineligible to move as an emergency bill. Felder told me just now he’s not sure what will happen. Stay tuned…

If the Guard need someone else to guard them, they shouldn't be here in the first place. They have already wasted taxpayer dollars ($201 MILLION for '25) to do nothing. Now they're taking officers who are actually fighting crime off the beat to watch over them www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
D.C. police to begin patrolling with National Guard after fatal attack
If enacted on a long-term basis, the change would significantly shift the way National Guard troops have worked with law enforcement in the District since their arrival.

Mayor Bowser has continuously said that protecting Home Rule is her North Star. Even if I’ve disagreed with her approach at times, I have never doubted that she has done everything she believes necessary to achieve that goal. Thank you for your service! #DCStatehood
It has been the honor of a lifetime to be your mayor.

Senate Republicans have introduced an appropriations bill that includes no new riders on Washington DC. That is now the starting point for negotiations with Democrats

I am so thankful we have an effective, tenacious fighter on behalf of DC in @dcattorneygeneral.bsky.social. This is a huge ruling that, if left undisturbed by the DC Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, means the National Guard will be off our streets on Dec. 12th
BREAKING: Federal judge rules that Trump's DC troop deployment is likely illegal — both as to D.C. National Guard and and out-of-state National Guard units — granting DC's request to block the use of the troops in this way.

The preliminary injunction is stayed until Dec. 11.

This is a disappointing vote that advances forward bills that would make DC less safe and just, and that would drive a stake through the heart of democracy in DC. But these bills have to pass the Senate to become law, and I am confident we can defeat them there www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
Taking Trump’s lead, House votes to change D.C. bail, policing laws
As the Republican-led House considers sweeping changes to D.C.’s criminal justice system, two more bills pass — with some Democratic support.

D.C. residents deserve the same right to govern themselves as every other community.

Yet House Republicans, who know little about D.C., are pushing bills that meddle in what should be local decisions.

I stand with D.C. leaders against these harmful attacks.

“This is about using Washington, D.C. as a test case to advance the far-right, MAGA agenda for blue cities across the country,” [Ankit Jain] said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference, steps from the Capitol and flanked by a couple dozen people waving red signs proclaiming, “FREE DC.”
Taking Trump’s lead, House Republicans eye changes to D.C. bail, policing
The Constitution gives Congress — in which D.C. has no voting representation — authority over D.C.’s laws and budget.

Let's not miss this great result just outside DC. The voters overwhelmingly said YES to proportional ranked choice voting in Greenbelt, which will allow for greater minority representation on the Council and end vote splitting. Another DC-area jurisdiction switching to RCV!

YES: 2073 (67%) NO: 1018 (33%)

On this, I'll agree with President Trump: If Congress eliminates the filibuster, DC statehood is inevitable
Trump: "They're gonna make DC a state and they're gonna make Puerto Rico a state. So now they pick up two states, four senators. They're gonna pick up electoral votes. It's gonna be a very, very bad situation. Now, if we do what I'm saying, they'll most likely never obtain power."
