There’s a case to be made that today (Feb. 11) marks the *30th day* of the congressional review period for the D.C. Income and Franchise Tax Conformity and Revision Temporary Amendment Act of 2025, which means it becomes law effective Feb. 12 (regardless of how the Senate votes)
The Senate voted 51-46 this evening to proceed to a final vote on H.J. Res. 142 tomorrow, so it looks like the Senate is on track to pass this disapproval resolution, sending it to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law later this month.

What a travesty.

the local personal liberties op-ed section has written recently about tax policy in California and Massachusetts, but to this point has nothing to say about Congress fucking over DC tax filing and budget

The U.S. Senate has started debating the Republican resolution that would repeal the tax bill passed by the D.C. Council late last year to decouple the city's tax code from certain federal provisions.

Vote is expected at 4:30pm. This resolution would undo DC’s new local child tax credit. It would be the first time Congress has ever struck down a local tax law. It would blow a huge hole in DC’s budget for the second year in a row. Please take 5 minutes to make some phone calls.

Meanwhile, the Senate, in which DC has no representative, is about to rewrite DC's tax laws in the middle of filing season and, oh yeah, blow another hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars hole in DC's budget a year after Speaker Johnson's $1 billion hole in last year's. www.dcfpi.org/all/congress...

Except DC, which seemingly never counts: “More than 2,500 National Guard members remain in Washington, D.C., in response to Trump’s ordered deployment, but under a nonfederal status. Their mission — part crackdown on crime and part sanitation duty — is expected to last until the end of the year.”

Bad enough that @wmata.com doesn't have a shelter or e-ink sign or any way to tell riders at 16th & Euclid NB that the D60 and D6X aren't coming, but after walking up to Irving the @metrobusinfo.bsky.social D6X just drove past a half-dozen people waiting at its next stop without even slowing down….

Nearly 20,000 people have already filed their taxes in DC. But if this passes, everyone would have to stop and start over. That will take months.

This is so chaotic!

Changing the tax code in the middle of tax season is terrible policy. Senators wouldn’t vote to do this to their own constituents.
“During Wednesday’s session, the Senate is expected to consider Cal. #315, H.J. Res. 142, disapproving the action of the District of Columbia Council in approving the D.C. Income and Franchise Tax Conformity and Revision Temporary Amendment Act of 2025. Senators will be notified when votes are set.”

Yikes.

If we don't catch up with our century's worth of deferred and ignored maintenance, it will continue to catch up with us in unexpected, disruptive, and potentially dangerous ways.
Northbound lanes of 14th St NW, from L St to Thomas Circle, remain closed due to the risk of roadway collapse over an abandoned sewer tunnel. Detours are in place. Closure expected through the end of the week, weather permitting. Thanks for your patience. 🔗 www.dcwater.com/about-dc-wat...
