U St Bus Project changes at 16th & U & NH Ave got a whole slide of their own, and for good reason—big changes here!

Though I do have _some_ trepidation about losing the NH Ave bike signal, I was one of several members _very_ happy to see this shitshow intersection get safer as part of this project.
Concept Detail: U St / 16th St / New Hampshire Ave This slide presents two map diagrams. One, a bit smaller (and, awkwardly, on the right side of the slide) shows the existing condition at this intersection, highlighting the narrow sidewalk on the north side of U St east of the corner, the westbound to northeast-bound slip lane closed with temporary materials, and the "dangerous wide-angle turns" from southbound 16th and westbound U St onto southwest-bound New Hampshire Ave that "occur at high speeds". The second, larger diagram, on the left, shows the Final Concept design, which, in addition to adding bus lanes on U St, - adds left-turn lanes for both east- and westbound U St, with dedicated turn signal phases - eliminates the current bike signals, creating instead more standard multi-stage bike crossings beside both U St crosswalks, both 16th St crosswalks, and the remaining northeast New Hampshire Ave crosswalk - moves both east- and westbound bus stops to the far side of the intersection - widens the north sidewalk east of the intersection and connects it to the island, permanently closing the north slip lane - expands the southwest pedestrian island and closes access to New Hampshire from southbound 16th and westbound U St, leaving only a narrow space for two-way bike travel. The existing turn lane from eastbound U St will remain.

DDOT presented tonight to the ANC 1B Transportation committee on the U St Bus Priority Project and it looks…pretty fabulous. Slides should be up very soon at buspriority.ddot.dc.gov/pages/ustnw but here are a few screenshots of highlights.
U St Bus Priority Project Overview Three project goals: - Improved safety on this Tier 1 [District-wide priority] High Injury Network Corridor - Faster, more reliable buses - Effective curbside management There are two adjoining projects: - A "Future Safety + Mobility Project" for the 1700 block of U St, including sidewalk widening and the "Redesign and reconstruction of 18th/U St/Vernon", will kick off planning in 2026 — this was just too big to fit into the bus priority project - Florida Ave NW Bus Priority Project east of 9th & U — on hold for now In between: The U Street NW bus priority project is working between 9th and 18th St NW. Planning was completed in 2023–24, design began this year and will continue through next year, and construction is scheduled for 2027. The project will deliver: - Offset bus lanes - Intersection safety improvements - Curb extensions and bulb outs at selected bus stops and sidewalk pinch points - Offset bus lanes mean most of the corridor will retain curbside access and parking—an estimated 80+ percent of existing parking will be retained. Florida Ave Bus Priority Project Status -- There's a separate transit priority project on Florida Ave NW between 9th & U and Dave Thomas Circle. At one point, it was linked with U St because each flows into the other, but it's now been separated back out again. Additional traffic analysis is needed for Florida Ave east of Ninth St NW, and they want to wait until after the U St project is complete and drivers adjust in order to "ensure reliable baseline data" for that analysis. So Florida Ave's "on hold until U St project [is] complete." Needs Assessment: Bus Operations and Performance — we've known for a long time that the U St bus lines are super popular and also super slow. Following WMATA's Better Bus Network....that hasn't changed. As of June 2025, U St is served, up to 8 times per hour each direction, by WMATA routes C53 (Woodley Park–Congress Heights) and C51 (Tenleytown–Anacostia). [There's also a C57 U St–Capitol Heights, but because it runs almost exclusively between 3 and 7 pm and also because it turns around at Vermont Ave and doesn't really serve the corridor, it wasn't mentioned.] C53 is a 24-hour high-frequency line running every 12 minutes or better, and it now uses 60-foot articulated buses (which impacts bus stop placement planning). C51 is a medium-frequency line, which runs less often but still at least three times an hour. Between the two lines, as of September 2025, they carry over 18.500 people per weekday — the C53 has become the top route in WMATA's system and averages over 14,000 riders per weekday by itself; the C51 carries another 4,500. They're also slow, averaging 6.7 mph at PM peak, with congestion and delays throughout the corridor at all times of day, and particularly severe congestion in the evening and late at night. DDOT considered changes to bus stop spacing as part of this project, and WMATA made the changes as part of Better Bus this summer—stops on U St at 17th St, 15th St, and 11th St have already been eliminated. Changes since concept selection in Aug 2024: In the FY 2025 budget, Council provided dedicated funding to study and construct as part of this project: 1. Sidewalk widening on 1500 block, including permanent closure of the westbound turn onto northbound New Hampshire Ave, in order to address the narrow, inaccessible sidewalk, improving accessibility and pedestrian comfort 2. Permanent closure of the westbound turn onto southbound New Hampshire Ave, in order to address the high-speed turn onto NH Ave and improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety. (The eastbound right turn onto NH Ave will remain.) 3. Sidewalk widening and reconstruction of 1700 block of U St and U St/18th St/Vernon St/Florida Ave intersection is also funded but will be a separate, future Safety and Mobility Project due to the complex planning, design, and construction needs.

DC Code § 50–2372. Public Life and Activity Zones Program. (a) There is established a Public Life and Activity Zones Program ("Program") within DDOT that shall: (1) Designate corridors in the District that shall be closed to personal vehicle traffic; and (2) Advise the Mayor on the issuance of grants to support efforts to close the designated corridors to personal vehicles. (b)(1) The Program shall publish on DDOT's website a report no later than December 31, 2026, selecting 3 roadways in the District, each no less than one-eighth of a mile in contiguous length, that are suitable for closure to personal vehicles ("designated corridors") for at least 24 cumulative hours per week. (2) At least one of the roadways selected for closure shall be in a neighborhood in Ward 5, Ward 7, or Ward 8 that suffers from high levels of traffic violence, air pollution, lack of safe access to public space, or low rates of physical activity. (3) Before publishing the report identifying the designated corridors, the Program shall solicit feedback from residents, business owners, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, Business Improvement Districts, Community Improvement Districts, Main Streets, and other entities within or abutting the designated corridor. (c) The report required by subsection (b)(1) of this section shall include a summary of the corridors considered and the rationale for selecting the designated corridors, including: (1) If the designated corridor has been closed to personal vehicle traffic for another event, such as an Open Streets event, farmer's market, or festival: (A) A description of the other event and any challenges associated with those prior events; and (B) Recommendations for addressing challenges identified pursuant to subparagraph (A) of this paragraph; (2) Notable safety concerns regarding the designated corridor as identified by DDOT or the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency; (3) Recommendations for any new or improved traffic infrastructure that would promote: (A) Pedestrian travel to and within the designated corridor, such as sidewalk extensions and curb bump-outs, developed in consultation with the Pedestrian Advisory Council; (B) Bicycle travel to and within the designated corridor, such as bike lanes or cycle tracks, developed in consultation with the Bicycle Advisory Council; (C) Accessibility for multimodal users and persons with disabilities or mobility challenges, developed in consultation with the Multimodal Accessibility Advisory Council; and (D) Access to public transit to or within the designated corridor, including Metrorail, Metrobus, and Streetcar service; (4) Plans for ensuring public transportation, government fleet, emergency and first responder vehicles, and freight and delivery vehicles maintain access to the designated corridor; (5) How the street closure can be implemented without additional agency staffing, including the use of barricades; (6) The anticipated cost of closing personal vehicle traffic on the designated corridor, including any traffic infrastructure described in paragraph (3) of this subsection or grants issued pursuant to subsection (a)(2) of this section; (7) The number of parking spaces eliminated by the proposal to close personal vehicle travel within the designated corridor and its anticipated impact on businesses within the designated corridor; (8) The feasibility of permanently closing the designated corridor to personal vehicles; and (9) Feedback received from the residents, business owners, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, Business Improvement Districts, Community Improvement Districts, Main Streets, and other entities within or abutting the designated corridor to personal vehicle traffic, and the Program's responses to that feedback. (d) Following the publication of the report, in order to obtain community feedback regarding the selected designated corridors, DDOT shall: (1) Publish on its website a form through which District residents may provide feedback regarding which of the 3 designated corridors should be closed to personal vehicle traffic; (2) Convene at least one public meeting, properly noticed in the D.C. Register at least 30 days prior to each public meeting, for each designated corridor; and (3) No later than March 31, 2027, announce which of the 3 designated corridors will be closed to personal vehicle traffic for, at a minimum, 24 cumulative hours per week, beginning October 1, 2027. (e) Beginning March 31, 2027, the Mayor shall, in consultation with the Program, with respect to the designated corridor selected: (1) Not Funded. (2) Implement the recommendations for any new or improved traffic infrastructure as described in subsection (c)(3) of this section. (f) Beginning October 1, 2028, any updates to the District's Multimodal Long-Range Transportation Plan shall include plans to close the remaining 2 designated corridors to personal automobile traffic for, at a minimum, 24 cumulative hours per week. (Oct. 8, 2016, D.C. Law 21-155, § 202; as added Mar. 21, 2025, D.C. Law 25-312, § 3(b), 72 DCR 1085; Sept. 3, 2025, D.C. Act 26-146, § 6112, 72 DCR 9623.) Applicability Applicability of D.C. Law 25-312: § 7 of D.C. Law 25-312 provided that the creation of this section by § 3(b) of D.C. Law 25-312 is subject to the inclusion of the law’s fiscal effect in an approved budget and financial plan. Therefore that amendment has not been implemented.

where did the $24,000 come from?

at $20/square foot/year, that would cover a 1,200-sf streatery, larger than just about anywhere I've ever lived.

assuming a generous 8-foot-wide parking lane, that's a 150-foot long streatery. Not even Prost's massive space is that big. Duke's *block* is half that.
Streatery permitting was initially free under the emergency conditions of the pandemic. Now, on top of a $260 permit fee, restaurant owners will have to pay $20 per square foot annually—as much as $24,000 for some streateries.

Was walking down Sherman Ave the other night and several of the big corner planters outside the capoeira studio had been shoved into the middle of the sidewalk. Was reminded of the time a few years ago when someone pushed the Odd Provisions planters nearly into the store, just a few blocks away….

I know we go through this every damn year, but

I still don’t understand why, esp. in Wards 1&4, DC DPW insists on using leaf pickup zones that are _almost_ the same as ANCs, and giving them names that are _exactly_ the same as _different_ ANCs.

(For that matter, why are they ward-based at all?)

Cutting 16th down will allow eliminating almost entirely the existing exit-ramp-like southbound roadway from Georgia until the merge — everything will be on the current NB roadway.

At the other end, the same project will also square off two of the 495 exit ramps and eliminate a third.

That other guy, though, three rings in three years _with three different teams_? That’s not only never happened before in baseball, it’s never happened in the NFL, NBA, or NHL, either.
From the Wikipedia page “Will Smith (pitcher)”: In the 2021 postseason, Smith made 11 appearances, successfully completing each without surrendering any runs. In the 2021 World Series, he closed out Game 6 and Atlanta defeated Houston to clinch the title. Smith had a 2–0 win–loss record with six saves. A couple years ago I managed to get a line about this into the Vision Zero Action Plan for a local town where something like 30% are immigrants, 40% speak something other than English at home, and 45% are African American.

Another critical limitation was that the data only includes crashes reported to police. For various reasons, many crashes are not reported or may not be responded to by police—as many as 10% of all crashes, up to 30% of crashes involving people walking or riding a bike, and as much as 40% of crashes in certain communities. [source: Laura Bliss, “The Car Crashes That Go Undetected,” Bloomberg CityLab, July 15, 2021, see main post for link.] However, crash report forms completed by police on scene are often the most complete, if not the only data source of necessary details.
