NYT, not exactly known for not acquiescing to Trump, emerges with more backbone than most of the European democracies.
I think I’m going with the @nytimes.com on this one, thanks.

I'm so pissed off about this, you can't just say "I reiterated my support for international law" while endorsing an action that is in obvious breach of international law.
Keir Starmer explicitly backs Trump's attack on Venezuela.

Says he has "long supported" getting rid of Maduro, who is an "illegitimate President" and "we shed no tears about the end of his regime".

Probably bad how the whole of Europe have fallen in line with Trump on this.

Question about that Maduro photo: why is he blindfolded? Surely by the time he’s on the USS Iwo Jima it doesn’t really matter if he can see where he’s going.

Insane how it took, like, 7 hours for this to go from sounds like a conspiracy theory to exactly what the administration said they’re going to do.
And I don’t want to sound conspiratorial, but if they feel like they can do this in Venezuela without any serious consequences, they’re absolutely going to try it in Cuba too.

Presumably they’re playing Swan Lake on CBS right now.

Global war because the US decides it wants to invade and occupy three Latin American countries at once.
Next up…. Trump says Colombian President Gustavo Petro “really does have to watch his ass”.

I'm going to come out and say it: I don't think Kamala Harris would have done this.

Suppose a US military government can actually be installed in Caracas. Does that not look like a ballooning US force under costant guerilla attack for twenty years until they give up?
January 3, 2026 at 5:20 PM
How is the US "going to run" Venezuela? How will that work?
January 3, 2026 at 4:52 PM
Will any European leader whatsoever find a backbone this afternoon? Probably not.

I find it unlikely Maduro has actually been captured, the scenarios here are:

1) Maduro gave up after one set of airstrikes
2) One set of airstrikes was enough cover for an on the ground military operation in the very centre of a foreign capital

I’m not convinced either can be fully true.

Will this finally end the myth that the far right are isolationists?

There is, to my mind, no justification for the continued use by the UK Government of X as a platform for official comms. There hasn't been for some time, in fact, but if the latest developments around AI-generated image abuse and CSAM don't change the policy I really don't know what will.

It is kind of weird how movies this decade have got to a point where you can't see them because they're too dark and you can't hear them because the music and SFX drown out the dialogue. Films that aren't like this such as Barbie do really well, so I'm not sure why this practice remains commonplace.

One of my extremely selfish reasons for the anger I feel whenever the far-right talk about how they hate London is that that I don’t like London for normal reasons but if I tell someone, particularly someone politically aware, I don’t like London they will make assumptions about my politics.

Getting in a prediction now that in the next few hours there will be a Telegraph article complaining the fireworks are “woke” and “anti-Brexit” because they showed an “EU flag” in the bit where they mentioned Europe winning the golf.

James Blunt, before he was famous as a musician, literally saved the world from a world war by refusing to engage Russian troops directly in Kosovo during his time in the British Army.
Ok folks: what is your favorite fact that you share with people (maybe a bit too) eagerly?

To try not to do analysis for a second, my personal dislike of Starmer, and I suspect that of a lot of those who did vote for him, comes from his utter failure to engage with the radicalisation of the right and the increasing acceptance of gutter racism in the public sphere.
I mean look at these graphs - 82% of 2024 Green voters disapprove of Starmer, 64% of LDs and 53% of the Labour voters *who explicitly voted for him less than two years ago.* That is not normal. I suspect it may be unprecedented.
