Okay. Story time about the tropey arrows in indie spaces because buckle up, we're going to talk about this and I'm going to get banned from several writers' groups as I do.

The scene: a kickstarter covered in blood splattered images.
The advice: Add a cutesy trope graphic

🧵
I get why authors are compelled to do it, but few things make me want to read a book/story less than those tropelist pointing to the book marketing banners. I really wish they'd go away, but I guess they Do work as a marketing tactic on more people than they're off-putting to.

Reminder, we open to nonfiction and reprint submissions in two weeks! For reprints, we're specifically looking for stories currently unavailable to read online for free! For nonfiction, we're looking for completed pieces, not pitches.

It is very funny that this Pope is just going to get jerseys from now on. Everyone decided that's what this Pope likes and that is it. It's like if your grandmother got you a puzzle for Christmas one year and you said you liked it so your entire extended family is like "oh that's the puzzle kid"

LOOK AT THIS TINY BABY 🥹🐙
It’s baby octopus season 🐙🦑

Saw this little guy last night with the Salish Sea School in Anacortes, WA as part of their free community dock walk I volunteer as an interpreter for.

We can tell it is a giant pacific octopus from the single line of chromatophores on each arm.

so, brains require energy, right, and my brain likes to go vrooom with non-stop thoughts during all waking hours, thus using up energy even when i'm not "deliberately" trying to use it/focusing, so when I DO want to brain (i.e. for #writing) the energy reserves are not always available 🤔

💔 Alice Wong’s last words: “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

We can never thank Alice enough for fighting all the good fights and especially all the hard fights. We all learned so much from your brilliance, your courage, and your indefatigable leadership. We will never forget you.

I am gutted to learn of @sfdirewolf.bsky.social (Alice Wong’s) passing. She was always a warm friend, a wonderful spirit, and someone who fostered my own growth. She helped me see that, as a #disabled person with chronic illness, I matter—I am whole. I’ll be posting some of Alice’s work. ❤️ forever

This is at least the fourth story I've seen of an author having to exchange multiple emails (over 20) with this publisher to get the contract language to not be rights grabby and it's one of three where the writer walked away.

I appreciate the effort and transparency but I will also say-

This keeps on getting worse and worse. I am not renewing my print subscriptions to F&SF and Asimov's.

(F&SF seems to still be on hiatus, the last issue I got was 1.5 years ago? Summer 2024? So crushing, I really liked it, Sheree's a truly great editor)
