the elite are made ordinary and the ordinary are made elite: writing memoir as a survivor in the age of Epstein
I do not know how to write memoir anymore, because all holiday season, while my timeline was busy un-redacting the Epstein Files, I was redacting my childhood Christmas photos.

Thinking about Zander. He would have turned 38 today.
Five years ago today, my mentor Zander Fodor unexpectedly passed away. He loved ctenophores and tunicates, and he’s why I went on to study marine inverts and dev bio. He loved to make ice cream and mini donuts. He’d answer any either/or question with “yes”.

Hey cuties. You need a valentine set right now, I can tell. It's only $20. You get 20 of them, 4 designs, & each one has a little fact inside.

I need a little more cashflow into Skype a Scientist to do the amount of shit I want to do this year. These valentines are a good start!

Back in October, the dock I had taken ~1/3 of my natural history documentation notes at got caught up on a piling on one end & lost it's floatation to gravity as the tide left it behind. I knew it was going to be removed & not fixed, but I went to see if it happened yet today. It was gone.

3 hours of health insurance phone calls so far today and I’ve needed to cry but I wish it was because I was actually able to work through some grieving and not because I’m frustrated and hopeless to the point of tears trying to just figure out how to get to keep existing next year

This parasitic isopod was another of my Peracaridan visitors this week. It's name is Rocinela belliceps and it mostly lives attached to the gills of fishes, but if you are lucky you may find one swimming around.

Today I visited the Takeshima Aquarium in Gamagori, which specializes in deep sea animals. I saw giant isopods, spider crabs, deep sea octopus and all kinds of fascinating #invertebrates.

We lost power the other night for long enough that everything in the freezers was totally soft and a loss and folks trashed it all while I was vending.

I’d bought some apple blossom pastries to have with my dad before he died & I’d been trying to get myself up to make them. Just realized I can’t.

More excellent tunicate news this morning, with a new preprint from the @mchatzigeorgiou.bsky.social lab 🤩 This work, led by @olegtolstenkov.bsky.social, describes the fascinating diversity of behaviors displayed by the larvacean Oikopleura throughout its life cycle ⤵️🧪
New preprint from our lab: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... @olegtolstenkov.bsky.social, Sissel and Rodolfo in collaboration with @appygenetics.bsky.social @msarscentre.bsky.social built a behavioral atlas of the planktonic tunicate Oikopleura dioica across its life cycle.

Just managed to fumble a nearly four pound container of peanut m&m’s I’d bought because they were my dad’s favorite and it of course flipped so all of them spilled across the floor and under furniture
