Communist.
Mahmood's Guardian piece is pretty devoid of content or ideas but the key pitch really is that making things visibly harder for asylum seekers is the only way to secure social peace.

Really obvious that the monitoring, confiscation, valuing and sale of any items would cost more than the revenue generated of them. Grim rhetoric designed to be perfomatively cruel
I'm sorry but any report that uncritically says assets would be seized "to pay for" costs is just parroting government propaganda. Confiscations are dreamed up as a punitive deterrent, not a sincere attempt at a funding mechanism.

Intrigued that the Labour Party has a Denmark policy - seize jewellery and assets from asylum seekers - and also an anti-Denmark policy - don’t tax middle earners enough to support welfare state.

It's early days... They just need to reconfigure work tasks to make them more susceptible to automation.
Despite industry leaders promising that agentic AI is the future, taking care of virtually all human tasks within the next few years

#CarnegieMellonUniversity researchers just released a paper showing that even the best–performing AI agents fail to complete real-world office tasks 70% of the time

I could point to a whole radical tradition of thought if I wanted to engage a local Labour account in sincere debate about whether there was something left wing about open borders but all I see here is determined ignorance. There's no arguing with that & there's no possible shared endeavour.

Most often I recoil in horror but if I could bring myself to enter a conversation I would like to know what left wing positively, affirmatively means to that section of the UK that votes Labour but hates protest, direct action, internationalism, solidarity, redistribution. It isn't clear at all

The UK is full of people loudly claiming the inheritance of radical struggle who plainly hate anyone currently engaged in radical struggle. You can read posts by them here on Bluesky, whining that no-one recognises them as left wing while snarling about "bread tubers".

From Agamben's essay "Beyond Human Rights".

tl;dr Human rights are spoken about as being a part of human identity that cannot be stripped away like other rights and are therefore a protection against state prosecution. And yet, they only exist in practice when a state chooses to uphold them.

God, there must be a room full of Labour twats somewhere patting each other on the back about how deftly they've threaded the needle here.
"Mahmood said a raft of tough immigration controls were designed to unlock “the inherent openness, tolerance and generosity” of the British people."

Such nauseating shamelessness.

This contribution to the volume of human misery is yet another policy from Labour based on a false premise, in this case that refugees are overly attracted to Britain. It will increase bureaucratic limbo, thus making worse the problem of "cohesion" it purports to solve.

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

Immigration policy was never motivated by "excessive generosity" on behalf of the UK.

Immigration policy is determined by the state's self-interest, pulled way one or another by the struggles of migrants and pressure from capital.

Home secretary to tackle UK's 'excessive generosity' with sweeping immigration reforms
In a statement to MPs on Monday, Shabana Mahmood is expected to tighten up the rules to allow for more deportations, and reduce the "pull factors" that attract migrants to the UK.

A lot of people are going to walk away from the Ghislaine Maxwell coverage with the impression that our prison system isn’t punitive enough but I’d say it highlights how most everyone else is treated with *deliberate* cruelty.

this isn’t my MOST woke opinion but it is one i’m passionate about:

borders shouldn’t exist and there should be complete freedom of movement globally. fuck visas. get rid of them
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

so glad the child sexual abuse panic was squarely pointed at folks like me by the people actually doing it & the public was like “yeah, seems right—freaks did it. not the men with all the money & fighting to keep child marriage legal, the women that are legal to kill in 30 states if you’re nervous.”
What a great day for finding out that a lot of things people thought were conspiracies are actually backed up by emails that are like hey pedo, let us pedo together in pedoland on the second day of the pedo month

At some point we have to confront that we're not trying to educate an ignorant population about the struggles of queer life and epistemic injustice.

They KNOW, and they want to keep it that way, if not make it worse. We are an affront to their pathetic, rotten societies.

The financial press is full of commenters pointing to the actions of firms and investors and saying "this is about to cause a crisis" and that's how you know that in the near future the mainstream press will be pointing at poor people and saying "this lot are too greedy and lazy!"

Zero.

I saw someone earlier bemoan the BBC's shift from being a public broadcaster to being a regime broadcaster and I have to ask... are these actually different things in any objectively definable way? Or is it just "state broadcaster I like" vs "state broadcaster I don't like"?

I really liked Reeves' Batman film because it firmly dissected and rejected hyper-macho fantasies of brooding vigilantism but this is a reminder that no amount of irony or critical distance will stop fascists from getting hard over depictions of violent men. They're simply immune to artistic nuance.
