NieR 4 is still available as a raid in Final Fantasy XIV, unlocked after 300 hours
NieR 3, a direct and immediate sequel to Automata, is a mobile gacha game that was taken offline and is totally unplayable today.
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

odd historical divergence I learned of recently; Ys I was released on the Apple IIGS as "Ancient Land of Ys" and the main character was renamed from "Adol" to "Eric". There are also many IIGSheads with fond memories of this game and no further connection to Falcom or JRPGs
