Labour’s shift away from “immigration is good but it needs to be managed” to “it is bad” is a gift to essentially everyone they compete with, because it means that they don’t have the right position to be able to attack *anyone*.
I'm sorry, but these attacks are just not going to convince Green-curious voters, because Labour is so visibly out of step with those voters' core values
This by @umakumaran.bsky.social is good - and a example of exactly how Labour should be taking on the Greens; on values, direct and on Labour territory. Taking them seriously.

Haunted by a passage in Death of Consensus about people hearing Callaghan warn about Thatcher bringing about job losses + public spending cuts, only to shrug their shoulders because they had plenty of that under him. Apply that to Labour's far right mimicry on immigration & community relations...
Right, this is the single biggest thing that people don't quite get about bloc politics, whether it is going "oh, the progressive vote 'just' became more efficient" like this is a coincidence or "but so and so is not a fit and proper candidate to be PM".

I find it weird that the focus is always on reducing “illegal work” by stopping people from working, rather than finding ways to make their work legal and therefore allow the workers to be taxed and contribute to the economy.

Also, digital ID can reduce illegal work no better than paper ID can.
However, I reiterate the original and main point I made which is if Digital ID can help reduce illegal work then that is a good thing.

And it is not progressive to lose control of who is entitled to be and work here.

When I was at an Oxford college whose library for some reason has a copy of Reeves’ BA thesis, I was separately approached by two different people asking for help to get hold of it. The obsession with taking down her intellectual credentials is revealing - and absolutely mental.
This is the point where the anti-Reeves stories tip into madness. Criticise her performance all you like but what the hell is this?

Your regular reminder that the only people who pay for newspapers are very old, very weird or both.

This story caters for such people.
You will be shocked to discover after reading these stories that while Rachel Reeves claimed to have been the "British girls under-14 [chess] champion" she was in reality merely the "Under 14s British Women’s Chess Association (BWCA) Girls" Champion.

This is getting utterly ridiculous now

This is how Chris Mason, like a child filled with wonder, described "the choreography and theatre that surrounds a Budget" in Feb 2024, when a male Tory Chancellor was in post.

"Plans, or even just options, can be floated... Reaction to them can be tested. Opponents can be teased or wrongfooted." 👀

Honestly the completely weird Budget coverage is mostly a sign of how pretty much any attack can stick when you’re unpopular enough.

Of course Rachel Reeves didn’t brief the full Cabinet on Budget details weeks in advance! No chancellor ever does! It would immediately leak!

Right, this is the thing, "the Budget is not honest", okay, sure, I'm with you, "because they made things seem worse than they are" - are you on glue?
There is an actual interesting little deceit in the budget, namely ther have the OBR still forecasting based on increasing net immigration back to 300-350k whilst the Home Secretary is promising to bring it down from 200k, which does dissolve about half the headroom, but somehow we're doing vibes.
Think this is exactly right - political journalism that is completely abstracted from policy, which was not the norm before 2017, has become the default. Impossible to have a serious attempt to either shrink what the state does or widen the tax base (have to do at least one) on that basis.

That is a lot of tweets. If you got this far you deserve a prize. Reasonable people will debate this growth strategy. But claiming there isn’t one is lazy nonsense. Higher growth matters because rising living standards are the goal, and higher investment is a key tool.

The BBC makes itself *extremely* hard to love with this stuff. I’ve worked in more than one small newsroom that’s discovered to its immense frustration that the country’s biggest news org has stolen its work with no credit whatsoever.
I guess it’s a compliment that the top story on BBC London’s TV/online output today is a direct lift of a month-old London Centric story? But once again the BBC is consistently the worst news outlet for actually remembering to credit others.
