Love the incredibly subtle way Boy Kavalier’s dipshittery manifests in this week’s Alien Earth.

Matt Damon in The Rainmaker. I was like “This movie’s good…and this guy’s the guy carrying it! And I’ve never heard of him before! And I’m like 13 years old!”
Fun topic: what’s the first time you remember seeing now famous actors? Like, I remember seeing Michael Fassbender in JONAH HEX and thinking “shit, this dude’s good.”
I first saw Karl Urban in the movie Ghost Ship at a filthy $1 theater.

I could’ve never anticipated how many times I’d be saying to myself “Hey, it’s the guy from Ghost Ship!” for the rest of my life.

Playing soccer in gym class in jr high. Now, I should point out that I am Bad At Sports. Never had much interest in watching them, neural deficits caused me to be uncoordinated as hell, asthmatic…nature did not design me to be an athlete.
what is your personal sports highlight?

mine is: down 2 with like 4 seconds left, deflection sends ball into corner

guy throws the ball in to midcourt and i intercept it, and pass to my teammate who gets fouled shooting a 3

2/3 FT, go to OT

they are down 1, i stuff the j at the elbow. win

It’s a three-way tie between Emilia Pérez, A Complete Unknown (a character unironically says “Open your ears, man!” and it’s the funniest thing in the world), and Cha Cha Real Smooth. And that’s just in the last year!
Worst movie you’ve seen in the last 10 years?

This is absolutely insane casting, and I’m here for it.

A movie you’ve watched more than 6 times, using GIFs.

You know what’s good for the soul after an awful workweek? Doing a double feature of two great movies. Watched Princess Mononoke in the new 4K print (not my first watch, but still wonderful), and then Sinners (which was excellent).

The fake nun. She’d come in with rosary beads, a wimple, everything. She’d be listed for special orders as “Sister” (etc, etc, something very nun-like). But…one of our coworkers found out she wasn’t a nun at all. So odd!
People who've worked in public facing roles. What's the weirdest customer you've encountered?

When I worked in an FE college library there was one guy who'd come in daily with a slab of cheese, bottle of wine & scissors he'd use to clip articles out of the days papers.

He was not a student.

Share one of your comfort WESTERN movies (even if it’s a TV show).

So my brother looooved the recent Peacock remake of Day of the Jackal, and, since he knows I tend to like spy stuff, he “forced” me to watch it.

Folks, I’m here to go against the grain and say This Is A Bad Show.

Following, I’ll give some reasoning. With spoilers! (Though I still have 1 ep to go)

I don’t care about sports.

BUT.

I did just stay up late to finish reading the last 9 volumes of Slam Dunk because WHO TOLD INOUE HE COULD MAKE BASKETBALL SO ENGAGING.

Anyways. Slam Dunk is awesome manga and you should read it. PHEW.

If you’re not watching The Pitt, you’re doing yourself a disservice. This week’s episode is probably the best of anything I’ve seen since Andor.

1. Men can only communicate through violence and it ruins their lives.
2. We are so small in the face of all-consuming evil/annihilation, but if we think right, we can still escape it.
3. The protagonist looks like a monster, but is a man. The villain looks like a man, but is a monster.
(1/2)
My favorite genres are:

1. Giant monster appears, society copes
2. Gangsters/crooks destroy each other over money/power
3. Ordinary folks dealing with real, human scaled modern problems
4. History film that is not about kings or military
5. Child survives incredibly dangerous environment
My favorite genres are:

5. Thriller (on a train)

4. Folks mess with someone who knows way more Kung Fu than you'd expect

3. Biggest star killed off fifteen minutes in

2. Time travel story that requires charts

1. Adventure in space!

My mom died from cancer in 2023. I took care of her for 2 years, as what is normally treatable became heavily untreatable due to quirks in her system. There’s research going on for her type of cancer right now that could help others like her. If you take funding away from cancer, you’re a monster.

Gaetz and Walsh both had me heavily considering going by my middle name for a brief time.
ok, just because this is close to my heart: who's the worst person with your first name?
It's long been the worst of times for many of us

Terry Serpico’s the lead thug in one of the movies and has a huge swastika on his jacket and a cross tattooed onto his head. Let that tell you what these movies were saying.
the thing to remember as well is that in the universe of The Purge films, the titular day isn’t the spontaneous result of disorder but a deliberate attempt by a far-right theocratic government to cull the population of social undesirables by unleashing militias, death squads and supremacist groups
*remembers that time when Chicago was called The Purge*

the right-wing reuses the same fearmongering formula over and over again. we need to better teach ppl
how to spot it and ignore it.
