Because we could all use a little distraction: I wrote about all the drama that's been brewing in Loving County, a land of oilfields and family feuds and, most recently, a takeover attempt by an outside group www.newyorker.com/news/letter-...
The Battle for One of the Richest and Smallest Counties in Texas
A few families have been duelling for control of Loving County for decades. Then the followers of a hustle-culture influencer moved in.

Working on a story that entails finding traces of an old social media presence. I am not good at this. Any of you experts at this sort of thing and would be willing to chat with me?

Also, if you don't get a reference? Maybe you miss something, but it probably doesn't matter all that much. If Shakespeare needs you to know something, he tells you three times. (I use this a lot.)

"I don’t mind flattering the reader. Often I’ll use obscure words and, even if the reader doesn’t know the word, he’ll feel flattered that you assume he knows the word." —Tom Wolfe
also an issue endemic to journalism. Publications are terrified of references readers might not get despite the fact that they are never more than a click away from enlightenment
"If you watch an episode of Cheers, you might hear references to foreign filmmakers, to classical musicians, to Russian novelists. The level of assumed knowledge back then was far greater; now, TV is rarely adventurous in its allusions."

I know we’re not supposed to say that voters are stupid, but you can’t argue with the results.
If “I need something to vote for, not against” means you won’t vote *for* a fascist party to not be in charge, then you can go suck an egg, sorry.

And if you're looking for, essentially, a précis on Goetz... us.macmillan.com/books/978125... I chatted with him for a while, which was a deeply unsettling experience. It was if he'd been dropped on his head and was still living in the mid-'80s.
The first of the two books about Bernie Goetz is out today so both get profiled in the paper. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/20/b...

There's mansplaining, and then there's mansplaining concentration camps to Andrea Pitzer
That seems like kind of a weird comparison historically. Things can be bad and not the same as a Nazi extermination camp.
