What good could one candle do, in all of this darkness?

Trad men are so prurient they compare READING to sex.
I’m sure when Paul made his analogy, he wasn’t foreseeing the aforementioned clerical anecdotes, or a Peter Kwasniewski saying only men can be lectors because they are “inseminating” the congregation with the Word

Well that was fun while it lasted.
#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three democratic appointees, #SCOTUS puts Texas's new House maps back into effect for (and, presumably, through) the 2026 midterms.

The three Democratic appointees, in an opinion by Justice Kagan, dissent.

I'll post the ruling shortly.

BREAKING: MSNOW reports Grand Jury refuses to charge Letita James.
DOJ can, by law, keep trying before a different grand jury, but this will be further proof of vindictive prosecution.

Under Trump’s leadership, electricity costs are going up nationwide.

17% in North Carolina.
15% in Georgia.
13% in Pennsylvania.
12% in Michigan.

And Republicans are doing nothing about it.

Pleased to speak with @gregsargent.bsky.social for this piece.

It sounds like the two survivors were shipwrecked and directly targeted.

If you accept the administration's bogus theory that there is an armed conflict (there isn't), then targeting the shipwrecked would be a war crime.
NEWS --> Tons of fresh detail on what video of the strike shows: Rep Adam Smith says two men are sitting on capsized boat, drugs aren't visible. Rationale officials gave for killing is they *may* have been able to keep trafficking.

"It's bad," Smith says.

This is my big soap box. We gave the presidency too much power with the PATRIOT Act, extrajudicial drone strikes, indefinite detention and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Trump is just using executive authority Congress gave to the presidency after 9/11 to maximum effect.
Congress, in my opinion has ceded too much of its authority to the Executive Branch in the last nearly quarter of a century. What the administration has been doing is simply part the Post 9/11 legacy. It’s got to stop. I say this as a GWOT era veteran.
Credit to Rand Paul. He hated extrajudicial drone strike killings under Obama and he HATES them under Trump where Congress has given no authorization.

Rand Paul tells me that he wants the full video of the Venezuelan boat strike released.

“And I think if the public sees images of people clinging to boat debris and being blown up, I think that there is a chance that finally, the public will get interested enough in this to stop this.”

I cannot imagine the level of moral bankruptcy to describe the actions of people whose boat has just been hit by a missile from nowhere (this was the FIRST such strike) and who were most likely making a desperate attempt not to drown in the ocean as trying to "stay in the fight."
Q: What did you see in the second strike?

Cotton: "I saw two survivors trying to flip a boat -- loaded with drugs, bound for the United States -- back over, so they could stay in the fight."

Not like it would be justified if they were drug smugglers, but I think it hasn't gotten enough focus that a boat with 11 people onboard heading from Venezuela to Trinidad was almost certainly migrants. These were probably, at least for some of them, people fleeing Maduro. That's who they murdered.
