Oh, military gentlemen, they bluster, roar and pray.
Nine sailors on the Nancy, boys, made fifty run away.
The powder in their hair that day was powder sent their way
By poor and ragged sailor men, who swore that they would stay.

Sometimes, if you have an older dog, you'll be halfway through morning walk on a warm fall day and they will decide they want to flop down on a random bit of sidewalk or grass and bliss out for awhile.

If you possibly can, you should sit down on the grass and pet them for awhile.

Kobo Plus pays fairly! It's often half of my Kobo income.

(I don't know how audiobooks in Kobo Plus work, just b/c I'd only loaded my audiobooks there in the past month, but I assume it's the same)
Does Kobo Plus pay decently? I have it but I also buy a bunch through Kobo.

Emmanuel, a 15-year-old with intellectual disabilities, wandered away from his mom’s fruit stand in October.

She reported him missing to Houston police. But instead of reuniting them, the city turned him over to ICE.

“They’re failing all of us,” his mom said.

"The Framers intended for juries—composed of ordinary citizens—to adjudicate disputes between citizens and their gov't. Assessing whether a police officer’s use of force was reasonable under the totality of the circumstances" is precisely the sort of thing they had in mind. [@foxmike90.bsky.social]
The Fifth Circuit v. The Framers: Justice in the Lone Star State
Assessing whether a police officer’s use of force was reasonable under the totality of the circumstances is precisely the type of judgment call the Framers tasked jurors to make.

it's wild to watch this happening in a situation where we've had no prior military engagements with the country or recent attack to even drum up a public desire for vengeance. nothing at all is going down but Trump is clearly trying to push Iraq 2.0 on the country.

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

The Koch Brothers and other corporate interests were behind the Tea Party and media powerhouses like Rush Limbaugh promoted it, while mainstream media covered it uncritically.

If there's one thing the mainstream news media love to overlook, it's the impact of the mainstream news media. The petite Tea Party in all its elite-backed astroturfiness was hailed like a sacred comet; the historically huge No Kings was played down by the NY Times, among other publications.

This 👇

Railways are large capital intensive infrastructure with very significant market failures - few things manage to be both natural monopolies and public goods with extensive externalities.

Ownership doesn't really change the fundamentals. Private monopolies and public monopolies same same..
Essentially the best way to run a railway is for it to be owned by a development corporation, and then frankly whether that corporation is state owned or privately owned is sort of a much of a muchness:
The missing piece in Labour’s rail renationalisation scheme
Whether trains are public or private is not the deal-breaker for a well-functioning service — it is about a better delivery model

Molly Reilly was the first female Canadian pilot to reach the rank of captain, the first to fly in the Arctic and the first to become a Canadian corporate pilot.
In 10,000 hours as a pilot-in-command, she never had a single accident.
This is her story.

YES.

Stevia/sucralose is my most reliable migraine trigger, and it's in *everything* these days.
Petition to make brands disclose any weird sweeteners they used instead when they have No Sugar Added labels.

Stevia is disgusting and gives me a headache and I don’t appreciate being ambushed with it

A lot of us would *give* people in various circumstances free books *if we were ASKED.* But people who do this kind of thing don’t see us as eligible to choose how our ebooks are offered. 🫤
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

The Overton window in action. There was a time when we were outraged that the construction trades unions endorsed Liberals. Now we get to be outraged that they endorsed DoFo and got rewarded for it. I despair.

I mean yes this is weirdly funny but had the mighty apparatus of the state gotten between me and my then newly-formed baking habit like this when I was a teenager I would have gone off like a loose 20 pounds of flour in the presence of a Zippo.

I’m not quite as pessimistic as this, but I’ve seen the basic tension in different cities.

Supporting safe streets, bike lanes, transit, and quality public spaces unfortunately does *not* guarantee that you support building enough housing to make those neighbourhoods accessible to regular people.
I think I might be done with transit, urbanism & cities in general

Its basically impossible to be working class & live in a city. And there’s zero desire among any political party to change that

Truth is if urban living is an unattainable dream theres little reason to care cities & transit anymore

I do not drink because I have almost no tolerance for it anymore (one margarita is too much).

If you are hosting a party, I recommend also stocking:
-fancy ginger beer
-coconut water
-premium juices like lychee and guava
-apple cider with cinnamon
-Italian sodas
-sparkling water

Lots of options!
