Twenty-five years after Ottawa's amalgamation, still the same fantasy.

Nepean was debt-free largely because it could offload expensive infrastructure to the regional government and expensive social services to the smaller central City of Ottawa. Not its inherent virtue.

It's one thing for a government official to say they have no comment on a possible story. As the flack says, no reporter is ENTITLED to responses.

Not acknowledging an inquiry at all, however, invites a reporter to keep trying to make sure you've seen it. You really can't get mad about that.
“You are not entitled to a response from us, or anyone, ever,” is what a US Education Department spokesperson wrote to one of our reporters, @megomatz.bsky.social, after she repeatedly tried to get comment from the department and its officials. My column on the condemnation of good journalism.
Our Reporters Reached Out for Comment. They Were Accused of Stalking and Intimidation.
Our journalists reach out to people they’re writing about to ensure fairness. But in this environment, they’ve found their efforts to do so are more likely to be vilified than appreciated.

Hey, fellow eastern Ontarians/western Quebecers/etc.—there could be some icy trouble coming.

We got a little portable battery pack thing a couple of years ago after some prolonged power outages. I just dug it out of the basement closet and it was dead. Now it's charging.

"I would not rule out treachery" is a hell of a thing for a writer at the notionally respectable Atlantic to say without relating any attempt to find out the truth of what happened IN A PIECE ARGUING FOR MORE OF THAT.
From the Atlantic attempt to justify Bari Weiss' decision. What's Canadian for "perfidious Albion?"

concluding that people don't need their newspapers to be accurate is professional self-harm done for no particular reason other than to justify layoffs and satisfy the AI lords
New: When the Washington Post ran tests on its AI personalized podcasts, the paper found that between 68% and 84% (!!) of the pods had potential issues.

Still, the paper decided to release the product anyway, saying it would “iterate through the remaining issues”
