Northern Virginian, part time soldier. Not CIA.
This game taught me about basic infantry tactics.

Suppression, movement, flanking, cover, concealment, line of sight. Morale and fatigue of soldiers.

In addition to being really fun, it allowed me to understand small unit warfare better than any first person shooter could.

I was agitated for airstrikes at the time.

"Control all the land, no buildings occupied by armed hostiles" is a pretty basic hurdle for a government.
they should have just shot everyone at malheur in the head and walked away
there's a through-line in my mind (probably pigeon superstition tho) from the Malheur fiasco to this, where it seems like the Dems really do believe there's enough agitated right-wingers ready to start shooting that they need to walk on eggshells to avoid a civil war

49 posts in the thread and he doesn't mention Russia or Ukraine. What MattY briefly glides over as "national security benefits," Sean ignores entirely.

Global oil and gas markets have a direct impact on the Russian war machine, i.e. the slaughter of a free people by an autocrat.
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

I only truly gained an understanding of and appreciation for the post-WWII liberal world order in 2024.

About a year before it received a death blow.

This is terribly sad. She was from the tiny town of Webster Springs in West Virginia. She drilled out of the 863rd MP Company, two counties away in Fayette County.

So basically every post Maggie makes on Twitter is ratioed by chuds, which is dispiriting. Fortunately this has no impact on the real world.

They did the same thing to Abigail Spanberger and she still won huge.
It’s shocking that simply stating federal law would cause the President of the United States to become unglued and threaten violence against me.

This is a moment for moral clarity and legal clarity.

Trick question, Despotic President Me would have unknowably shifted perspectives from Regular Me.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

You know we'll be in crazy times if they increase the State Defense Force budget above $200,000.
wasn't really an issue in the election but low key important that with spanberger as governor D.C. will be bordered by two states whose national guards are led by democrats

From what I can tell, O'Neall is a YIMBY who wants to build dense housing in the downtown.

So, that's really great, even more than the partisan angle.

Yeah Germany is a federal republic with states. In Britain it's a unitary state for the 80% of the population that lacks a devolved parliament.
Genuinely think German constitutionalism is the clear parallel for American parliamentarianism, not British

Am I correct in thinking that The Crown exposed Americans to more of British history from 1945 to 1995 than any other piece of mass media?

Seems a great accomplishment, even if people don't love the fixation on the royals.

So many unanswered questions though. What is this orange mystery?

I'm disappointed in Pete, and I don't think he did his due diligence here.

The cynic would say that the kids hate this stuff and they only want to make money or be social media influencers or whatever.

But the fact that it's counter to the zeitgeist is probably what could make it work. People are desperate for something fresh.
the actual thing that young men like that dems can lean into is MORAL HEROISM AND SELF-SACRIFICE TO PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY
more broadly you can't lean into 'things young men like' when those things - crypto, gambling, AI porn, online misogyny - are *bad*. you have to identify the good or at least neutral things - self-improvement, team sports - and lean into them.

I'm at a restaurant. And the guy next table is fighting with his wife over Taylor Swift, saying she doesn't have talent or whatever.

I gotta leave the boomer parts of Fairfax County.

As a guy who was rooting for Conor Lamb, I've been hugely vindicated.

Even beyond ideology, it's important to look at a candidate's history. Have they worked in a legislature before? How did they vote and get along with their caucus? What else have they done, professionally?
This entitled schmuck, who thinks he’s too good to wear a suit and do the boring parts of his job.

MGP probably wins easily given the nature of the seat.

But we could theoretically see the most interesting matchup: a 4-person jungle primary with 2 Dems and 2 Republicans.

If someone has to drive 45 to work because that's the only home they can afford, they are immiserated. And we see that all the time in the DC region.
Except it’s NOT too expensive to live in most places. There’s no evidence that most people are being uniquely immiserated by housing costs or forced to live in bad housing
I don't know what counts as acceptable evidence, and there's certainly nothing that would meet typical standards of academic rigor, but intuitively I would expect "it's too expensive to live most places" to be radicalizing in chaotic and unpredictable ways.
