Y'all. Folks who study such things know this is competitive authoritarianism. They know this is fascism. They know we are dancing on the knife edge of civil war.

If it isn't yet impacting you? mazel tov. Maybe pay attention to your broader community.

Don't let the waves of "normal" deceive you.

It’s time we all called these movements what they are: Exercises in white supremacy.

The academic freedom harm is real, but it’s part of a larger plan to resegregate higher education in America. And it’s working.

JD Vance owns a company that buys American real estate and sells it to foreign investors. They specifically target Americans in crisis to buy their property for less than it is worth.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

According to the car wash owner, agents arrested employees before they could obtain their documentation from their work lockers. So many were likely here legally.

Here's hoping this article on Zac boasting about how he ruined some immigrants' lives follows him around for a very long time.

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

New from me in @newrepublic.com: “Primary Every Democrat.”

If the current crop cannot demonstrate they care more about democracy than enjoying three-day weekends, we should flood the zone and challenge them all.
Primary Every Democrat
It’s exhausting to watch poll-tested, donor-beholden congressional Democrats continue to be too old, too cloistered, and too bumbling to do anything as the government burns.

40 years ago we’d have congressional hearings falsely accusing metal bands of putting backwards messages in their songs that told kids to kill themselves & now we have a planet-killing chatbot that’s all like “bet you won’t commit suicide chickenshit bitch” & the government is like here’s $5 billion

In "We Were The Lucky Ones" (true story of a Jewish family in Poland in WW2) the daughter learns her father has been detained. She puts on her most respectable dress to speak to camp guards, so they'll tell her the truth about if he's there.

Look at this man, in his suit. How is this happening.

Mamdani got a humanities degree.

His win helps to illustrate that one of the central forces driving higher ed’s dissolution of the humanities is the fear that teaching people how power works can also lead to their interest in seizing it on behalf of the less powerful.

I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”

Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.

Mamdani reiterates his support for trans folks, his determination to fight "the scourge of antisemitism," and his pledge to fight Islamophobia--and throws a punch at the billionaire-funded campaign of lies against him. "In a time of political darkness, New York will be the light." This is a SPEECH.
