Professionally nervous.

By day I build community for educators, by other parts of the day I try to put my fiction MFA to good use. Currently querying an adult fantasy novel about witches and motherhood.

It is so essential for People In Charge to remember that, when it really comes down to brass tacks, they actually don’t have a CMS login

one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Tradition states that last night Jesus emptied out all the jails. Spent Saturday night telling people “I don’t care what you did, people weren’t made for prisons.” The next day to prove His point He broke out of solitary. It is finished. Easter is incompatible with the carceral state. Happy Easter.

In the past day I’ve heard two people who really should know better say they asked ChatGPT for factual info.

ChatGPT is not a search engine. It is predictive text based on other people’s stolen writing; its whole job is to make stuff up. Please do not ask it for facts. Tell a friend.

Whenever there's chatter about whether audiobooks count as reading, I think about the professor I had in grad school who admonished me in the middle of a class discussion for sharing I had read the assignment that week (the always excellent We Have Always Lived in the Castle) via audiobook. /1

HOT TAKE:
Audio is the original storytelling medium, and text is a pale imitation. All this punctuation is trying its hardest to replicate the subtleties of speech in your mind as it would have been translated by voice, with only partial success.

Audiobooks are returning story to its true state.
