Hi writers! I’m looking to assign a couple of features for Slate before the end of the year. If you have anything in mind that you think would be a fit please send me a pitch! Jenée.Desmond- harris@slate.com or dm me.

RTs are appreciated so this can reach more people. Thanks!

My favourite thing about the future is how if you google something, then try to click on a news article about it, you have to scroll through multiple ads and click to accept cookies before being told to log in and that news article is only available if you pay

Fiction writers! Would you find a podcast on grammar specifically for you helpful? Talking about nitty gritty stuff like hyphenating compound nouns and parenthetical commas? I get other writers messaging me a lot wanting to know why their editor wants something changed and I thought it might be 1/2

Write something. Write it today. Write your heart out. Write something weird that only you would think of. Your enemies will not topple to your silence. Write your future and live it.

The teenager who served me today at my local supermarket remembered me as the crazy chicken lady who was about to go pick up baby chicks last time she served me and demanded to know how they were and see photos and this is why self-checkouts just don’t suit everyone

This is a great piece from Mel Saward on some of the First Nations books that should have appeared on RN's Top 100 Books of the 21st Century.
The ABC’s Top 100 books poll lacks diversity. Here are my 10 First Nations ‘books of the 21st century’
Just three Aboriginal writers appeared in Radio National’s poll. There was little sense of the breadth and creativity of our First Nations writing scene.

Aaaaand we have ten instances of the word Champagne. All have to go, since ... this world has no France and therefore no Champagne region. I love revising. It isn't annoying at all.
Really, really want to use the phrase "a stranger in a strange land" in this thing I'm writing but am forcing myself not to since that's decidedly biblical and this is second-world fantasy. Am I gritting my teeth? Who can say #writing

Can I please just be clear that I talked about hieroglyphs on rolling pins in THIS MONTH's newsletter: it isn't something I talk about ... every month. That would be a bit weird, I think. Also here are some cookies made with said rolling pin.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

people out there thinking asimov's three laws of robotics are actually real
The #1 thing that blows my mind about how most people use LLMs: they believe if they ask the LLM a question about how it works or how accurate it is, the LLM will truthfully answer them.

I have seen SO many seemingly-smart people do this.
i don't think it helps that the llms constantly lie to the user about the capabilities of llms as part of its whole obsequious fawning style of interaction that oversells its abilities and obscures its obvious limitations by fundamentally misrepresenting how the technology works
