Fantasy and horror writer.

Listen to Liars and Leeches, a horror audio drama produced by Hemlock Creek Productions.
I'm looking for fiction recs that are about the end of the world/are set after the end but that aren't bombastic action stories. Something in the vein of Station Eleven. Overall, I prefer things to be hopeful to bittersweet over nihilistic. Thank you in advance!!

Following up on this. This remains a ‘cave is minutes or hours away’ situation. If you want to impact how this plays out you need to contact senators literally now. I want to add additional points of context. What I’m relaying is what I’ve picked up from highly reliable sources.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself
An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

A common mistake many new writers make is crafting a character and then, without story justification or world building to support it, making them heterosexual. This leaves readers confused & takes them out of the story.

I'm so incredibly angry at the people who are going out of their way to make Palestinians' lives worse.

If you don't want to help people in need, just scroll past, ffs.

Stop going out of your way to be utterly shitty to folks who are asking for fucking help, who are being genocided and starved.

Hit a mild reading slump so wound up diving into the niche that always gets me out of a slump: either a fiction or non-fiction book about the Tudors and those around them. This time, it's a biography of Catherine Howard titled Young and Damned and Fair, which I am loving so far.

I think I cracked why my draft hit a wall towards the end of act one, which means going back to edit/rewrite a large chunk of the opening to add in some necessary early worldbuilding. I still am hoping to have a finished full draft by the end of September though.

If I hadn't been expecting that ending I would've missed it. So when Buddy Guy is playing and the credits start to run and HBO shrinks the window and offers you other to stuff to watch, you need to hit your enter button to go back to the movie so you don't miss the ending. 2/2

My PSA for the day.

Just saw Sinners on HBO. Y'all have probably heard plenty about it already, but I wanted to warn anyone who decides to watch it on Max that the ending is probably the best part of the movie, and it happens after a lot of the credits have run. HBO tries to switch you away before you get there. 1/2

the early K/S shippers in the 60s / 70s / 80s, living in eras of intense queer persecution and trauma while writing fanfic where two men in love get to have a happy ending on their little spaceship 300 years from now, speaking into existence a future they couldn’t even see, are absolute icons to me
Women started the first STAR TREK conventions, the fanzines, and gave birth to Shipping and Spirk, which was called Slash then with Kirk and Spock, i.e. K/S. They kept the franchise alive in the 1970s.

Bjo Trimble, the most famous of them all, saved the show from cancellation.
... When will men realize that women are the biggest part of sci-fi fandom. 🫩

Behavior I am constantly working to unlearn. Absolutely poisonous to art.
Social media makes writing harder. Your brain becomes wired to look at every single thing you write and imagine the most bizarre, bad-faith reading of it imaginable and then find yourself revising to try to preclude it.

I'm trying to find an in-person creative writing group in LA that meets regularly and close-ish to me, and beyond checking MeetUp I have no idea how to do that. I'm at the point where I'm considering starting one myself but I also don't know enough writers irl to have anyone attend
