Everyone involved knows Mel is a virulently racist fascist lunatic with horrendous views on the use of massive, murderous violence against civilians. But there she still is on Sky News, because her crackpottery is well within acceptable opinion, for our political/media class.

A worldview that divides people into givers and takes will prevent people from supporting redistribution, inclusion, sustainability and other progressive values. It will prevent people from voting Labour in elections. Labour is shaping public opinion against progressive politics.
This is so disgusting.

My constituent, Wilmer, was mauled by an ICE attack dog despite the fact that, as he has consistently explained, he was not resisting arrest or trying to flee—his wife and young children, all U.S. citizens, were forced to watch helplessly as Wilmer was violently attacked and dragged away.

Something i didn't have time to say is: the standard liberal neurodiversity response of *actually theyre underdiagnosed, the increase is just us getting better at recognising neurodivergence, etc.* is a dead end here as it precisely depoliticises the issue and reifies and essentialises diagnosis.

What a wonderful story - and a beautiful illustration of the power of the arts.

Great writing expands our imagination. It helps us to see the world in new ways.

And that has consequences that can never be measured by "average starting salaries" or "contribution to GDP".
Great culture can save lives. Literally.

Amazing letter in today’s @thetimes.com about Tom Stoppard

One of the reasons I expect Reform to go worse in the UK than Trumpism is going in the US is that I think the UK has weaker civic society institutions. Our churches and universities are less rich, powerful, or inclined to resist, our media more compliant and uniform, our unions just as desiccated.
This is the most alarming story I’ve read today. Giving up the fight before it’s started

Bloody hell -they're actively seeking out meetings with those who've accused universities of “poisoning the minds” of students, claiming they spread a “twisted interpretation of history.”

Surely they're clever enough to realise kissing far right arse will not stop the book burnings if they get in

"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

fucking infuriating because of course it is completely ridiculous that the gov is paying £100s for asylum seekers to travel 100s of miles to see a doctor. but the simple, cheap fix is letting them see a GP in their local area! not banning them from taking taxis. fucking nonsense establishment.

I think what this (widely shared among some people who follow me) attitude misses is that, of course, if you have a series of cowboy builders, you are going to be more and more irate as the process goes on.
The fact that every single PM this century has been more unpopular than the previous one shows that the electorate is impossible to please. We are simply predisposed to automatically hate every government no matter what. I don't know how that's sustainable long-term.
