Hey #AcademicSky - I feel like we talk a lot about writing habits (aspirational 30 minutes a day, etc...) but do you all have a *reading* practice? How do you keep up with the literature? Do you aim to read a certain amount a week? Keep an endless tbr list?

The House has voted unanimously to repeal the provisions in the shutdown package which allow GOP Senators to sue the federal government and get as much as $1 million in damages - because the feds looked at their phone records in the Jan. 6 investigation.

Discworld QOTD, from The Light Fantastic

'“I said I hope it is a good party,” said Galder, loudly.

AT THE MOMENT IT IS, said Death levelly. I THINK IT MIGHT GO DOWNHILL VERY QUICKLY AT MIDNIGHT.

“Why?”

THAT’S WHEN THEY THINK I’LL BE TAKING MY MASK OFF.”'

NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

Glad to see Japan (who else) show up strongly for my ‘give wheelchair users battle mechs’ platform.
At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Toyota revealed Walk Me, a four-legged autonomous chair designed to transform mobility. Unlike wheelchairs, Walk Me well, walks: its robotic legs can climb stairs, cross gravel and manoeuvre on rough ground. buff.ly/YgoBcg1

You might not have caught what just happened on the Senate floor, but the Senate just “deemed as passed” the Epstein resolution.

That means as soon as it arrives from the House, it automatically passes the Senate (with no amendments) and heads to the President’s desk.

Wow.

Yeah I can trace this divergence in what people yell at me for commenting on online or studying ("how can we take human outcomes seriously if SE is changing") vs what people send me in secret worried messages ("please tell me how can we take human outcomes seriously if SE is changing")
Working for a SaaS company and then logging into bsky is a surreal experience because bsky is all "no one wants AI, ever" and in the meantime like 90% of real customer feedback I read at my real job is like "where the heck is your AI? I'll cancel if you don't add it by next week"
There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.
